I had one of them just now, and when I brought the topic up with my mom she looked at me like I had two heads. I assumed it was a universal experience but now I’m not so sure, and I’m even more stumped after googling “carbon dioxide burps”, “soda burps”, and “soda burps can’t breath”, and coming up with no pertinent results. I’m frustrated so now I’m asking all of you (I would ask on Reddit if I wasn’t banned).
Anywho, I have to be careful not to burp too strongly after chugging a carbonated beverage, because occasionally I’ll get a scary “soda burp”, in which I literally can’t breathe for several seconds afterwards. I’m guessing that the amount of carbon dioxide I just expelled from my stomach is so great that, despite my mouth being open, it doesn’t escape quickly enough and my trachea fills up with it when I try to breathe in.
It’s a terrifying sensation, though I have yet to determine the mechanism - either my diaphragm is indeed contracting and the co2 is entering my lungs, creating a feeling of suffocation, or the co2 is actually preventing my diaphragm from contracting at all. To me it feels like the latter; for a solid two or so seconds it literally feels like I cannot breathe in at all. The best I can manage are weak croaking sounds. But maybe that’s what suffocation by co2 indeed feels like - like you can’t breathe in even though you’re technically breathing in a gas that’s not oxygen.
Any of you ladies know what I’m talking about?
