Donna Deitch, an openly lesbian producer, director, screenwriter and actor, directed the first feature film depicting a down-to-earth story about lesbians with positive possibilities.
Desert Hearts (1985) is an American film directed by Donna Deitch and based on the screenplay written by Natalie Cooper, which was an adaptation of the 1964 lesbian novel Desert of the Heart by Jane Rule. The film is set in Reno, Nevada in 1959 telling the story of a university professor, Vivian Bell (Helen Shaver), awaiting a divorce who finds herself reciprocating romantic feelings for a free spirited woman, Cay Rivvers (Patricia Charbonneau), known to enjoy the company of other women.
