DiscussionWho would you invite to your imaginary dinner party?

So, we’ve all been chatting about broccoli and coffee and other lighthearted things lately and it’s really nice to just chat together about more chill topics, so...

Who would you invite to your imaginary dinner party? As many people as you want, alive and dead (and you can all understand eachother regardless of language or time period) what would you serve them? Where’s the venue?

I’ll start with my choices...

My first imaginary hypothetical dinner party would be women only, my guests would be:

JK Rowling - our queen! I LOVE this woman, I’ve never understood celebrity worship but omg would I love to buy this woman a drink - she’s honestly a heroine! Also, her book The Casual Vacany is one of my faves - had me laughing out loud at parts...she’s so articulate, witty and unapologetic.

Marina Abramović:I reckon she’d be pretty fascinating to talk to - she’s done some crazy stuff!

Lionel Shriver: We need to talk about Kevin is a literary masterpiece and is probably my favourite book ever. She’s also gender critical and cool AF

Helen Oyeyemi: I’ll be impressed if anyone knows this author - her book The Icarus Girl is another favourite of mine - this book means a lot to me as her main character is so reminiscent of me at that age, the book gets into some very cool Nigerian folklore as well and she wrote it when she was 18 at uni! She’s so talented.

Amy Winehouse: my favourite singer of all time, I think she’d make such an awesome friend and I don’t think she’d stand for all the trans crap - I think she was such a beautiful and creative soul and she struggled with a lot of the things I struggle with.

Andrea Dworkin: would be curious to know what she was like - she’s painted as a “man hating feminazi” by mainstream media and I think that’s because men are so afraid of intelligent, fearless women who don’t give two shits what they think - I think this woman was the epitome of feminist theory. I’d like to challenge myself because despite knowing she was right about the vast majority of men, I STILL excuse male behaviour all the time...hopefully she’d be able to fix that and help me unpick some of my female socialisation!

Marie LaVeau - voodoo queen! This woman is p much my favourite historical figure - total badass and I’d love to know what she was like as a person. I think she truly had mystical abilities.

Dorothy Eady: idk if anyone knows much about her case but it’s fucking fascinating. I’d LOVEEE to ask her so many different questions!

Magdalen Burns: what can I say, she was amazing and funny and it is such a sad thing that she’s no longer with us. I had such a crush on her too lol.

My second hypothetical, imaginary dinner party MAY include men...MAYBE. It would include:

Alice Cooper: he’s a cool dude 🤷🏻‍♀️

Ricky Gervais and his Girlfriend, Jane: his standup has me in stitches and I think he seems a nice, down to Earth man. He also upsets TRA’s, which pleases me.

Rumi: my favourite poet - I think he was very mystical and wise and I’d be curious to ask about his life.

Lundy Bancroft: I’d want to ask him more about his line of work. I have been in a physically /sexually/emotionally abusive relationship and managed to get out of it - I had read Why Does He Do That? years before I met my ex and it helped me to notice and accept the nasty, bullying, coercive behaviour and get the hell out - I’d make excuses for him leaving bruises all over me and forcing me to do things sexually that I didn’t want to do but did find the courage to leave after 7 months. I’d also like to know if Bancroft is really a good man - so many men let us down!

Robert Webb: funny guy who is GC I think.

I’ll leave the men at that since I don’t want my party to become a sausage fest. My women only party would be better anyway I think

What would I serve? ....hmmm, well I’m not very good at cooking really, but maybe in this hypothetical reality I AM a dinner party veteran - I’d have homemade soup (sweet potato, pea and celery which I know sounds gross but is actually very nice and a thing I can make from scratch!) then a mushroom risotto for the main? Or maybe Joloff rice? maybe a simple pasta bake because who doesn’t like that? 🤷🏻‍♀️ then I actually do make a mean coffee cake irl...that may be pudding? Or a posh cheese board or something. OR I could do a buffet type thing and have a big range of choice 🤔

The venue: either a butterfly house (like, a massive greenhouse all full of beautiful flowers and plants and butterflies) OR not a cat cafe, but a cat PALACE! So many cats to pet and cuddle in between courses! They wouldn’t mix with butterflies though...so it’d be one or the other! And magically there would be no cat hair in the food in this brilliant and miraculous world.

Anyway, please get as into this imaginary event as I did lol, maybe got a tad carried away here 😅 I’d love to hear about everybody's ideal guest list and plans!
