QuestionRunning shoes
Posted December 4, 2024 by TheChaliceIsMightier in Women

I'm in the market for some new running shoes for Christmas. I usually run on pavement or a treadmill, but sometimes use the shoes for other athletic activities, too (pickleball, softball, etc.).

I'm hoping someone might know off the top of their head and save me the research... Which company is the most supportive of women? I know I'm not buying from Nike lol.

I don't know the answer to your question, but I strongly encourage you to go to a specialty running store, have them watch you run/walk, and try on a few different brands. That's the best way to make sure you get shoes that work for you.

I second this advice but I would add that you can try them all on in the store and then search online to find them cheaper. Often you can find the prior version of the same type of shoe for a much cheaper price.

I've also been looking for any shoe actually designed for women specifically, especially after reading so much about our different Q angle and such in the women's sports discussions. So far I've found Allyson Felix's company Saysh, and another one, also founded by a woman, called Rykä.

Both are pretty expensive for me, but I think it must be a lot better and safer for our feet, knees, hips, spine and who even knows what all else to wear shoes actually tailored to our anatomy instead of the male-default nonsense. Hopefully these women design for longevity as well.

Oh those are so expensive! Maybe I can save up for a pair.

Same here, I can't just drop that much money on shoes but I work a lot and am not getting any younger, so I'm hoping to get some soon and hopefully save myself more medical problems down the line from wearing equipment designed for males.

I love my Rykas. I got them almost five years ago and they’ve held up beautifully. My daughter has worn her through three years of college with heavy walking and they still look new. They’re definitely a good investment, and the website has a sale section.

Thank you for letting me know they last a long time! I'll definitely try to get some for work then. We have some rules about workplace safety but I think the hiking shoes or something will probably pass muster.

I love Hoka Cliftons. I have no idea about their stance towards women.

Allyson Felix launched a shoe line. I have never tried them. https://saysh.com

I don't know about the woman angle, but Hoka is my go-to.

Altras are my jam. Women-specific design.

I get shin splints easily, and I've found that ASICS are always a really good choice for supportive soles that hit a full range of use and are comfy. I've been able to run on tracks, play sports in various gyms/surfaces, hike, and just wear them casually with no issue.

They're a little pricy but I try and buy a few "models" behind in their releases to keep prices reasonable. What might work is going to a sporting goods store to try on a pair and find what type you like, then order an 'older' version from Amazon or somewhere similar. A good pair can last me about a year of lots of use, more if I'm light with them.
