[lefthandedhater: “I hate listening to a bop of a song by a female artist and then getting the vibes ruined by some random male feature. like i was vibing and suddenly some random guy is talking about money and pussy. it induces sleep paralysis in me. i can’t move and i have hallucinations. i cry”] (https://twitter.com/lefthandedhater/status/1524056185686605829)

Discussion of what songs by women are ruined by male features. Hilarious, entertaining and educational about how some songs have versions without the feature on some platforms.

I would be so down for this except i am crummy about taking the leap on new music lol.

I think my favorite female written album is Fumbling Towards Ecstasy by Sarah McLachlan. It is her best album by far, it's sonically rich and off the beaten path, I guess the genre would be art rock. I am attached to it because my parents played it a lot around me when I was a kid, but as an adult who is more into music of my own now, this one will definitely stand the test of time. The guy who worked with her on the instrumentals helped to weave this crazy tapestry around her voice and melodies. The lyrics tackle women's issues such as stalking, wanting to be respected in love, forced prostitution, infertility, losing a partner to illness, but often you have to read between the lines to truly get these things from it. I like that it doesn't shove the pain down your throat in a garish way. It softly guides you into the emotions. Even the songs I used to skip have beautiful things to offer. The pitchfork review of this album explains how she wrote it in a cabin after having a stalker of her own. It was nice to read a good review for an album that I already loved to learn how it was made.

Plus you know Sarah is obviously an icon for having started Lilith Fair. though she's white and from the anglophone world so not super exciting to think of in terms of finding things off the beaten path... but to me it's the lyrics of the album that make it essential. When everyone thinks of her they think Sad Dog Commercial. But when I think of her I think of serpentine instruments winding around my feet as she sings to me the true gamut of human feeling. Sorry to gush over it lol

Sorry for the late response- this was a wonderful comment and I am definitely intrigued, it sounds like a brilliant album. Your description of it somehow reminds me of Ancient Heart by Tanita Tikaram. Thank you for the recommendation and I hope to see you in the music posts!

I love talking about music here. We have such a diversity of tastes that not every album will please everybody, but I will definitely read the posts.

tamataFebruary 21, 2022

I'm sort of hoping that most members would have to skip some posts. Hopefully, it'll mean that I'm doing well in putting variety into the selections.

I love this idea, because I'm always looking for new music. Peoples' taste here hasn't steered me wrong yet!

I just started listening to Mazzy Star btw :) I'd love to learn more about Elastica and Veruca Salt, they seem super cool and I haven't listened to much. These are all 90s-era grunge goddesses.

YoureNotaClownfishFebruary 22, 2022

I have been obsessed with Mazzy Star for decades and have seen her twice!

My rec: She Hangs Brightly is THE perfect album and should be listed to from beginning to end in its entirety.

hypatiaFebruary 22, 2022

Will do!

Fun! What a great idea! I'd also say that including non-female-majority bands but where the female musician(s) are prominent or particularly interesting or could prompt interesting discussions would be fine by me too, personally. But it's your list so you do you!

One suggestion/share: I'm really enjoying Siobhan Miller at the moment, she's got a great voice and I love the folk music she includes on this album. It's really nice to be able to sing along at-pitch (as of course with a female voice singing along with a male singer, you're always making octave accommodations)

tamataFebruary 20, 2022(Edited February 20, 2022)

Thanks for the support and rec! I'll give that album a listen today.

On the majority-male groups comment- I was just thinking about that. I'll decide for sure later, but I'll probably go for it.

f_by_natureFebruary 20, 2022

Exactly, I was also thinking of like Fleetwood Mac. You could always have 50/50+ as a general rule that you're quite happy to break if it feels worthwhile :D

tamataFebruary 21, 2022

Hey! I just wanna say I listened to the album you recommended yesterday and WOW, it's freaking gorgeous! I'm gonna check out the rest of Siobhan Miller's work, she'll definitely get a feature.

f_by_natureFebruary 21, 2022

I'm so pleased you like it!! warmed my little heart to read this :)

Unruly_RoseFebruary 21, 2022

I'd love this! I'm still working on expanding my tastes and this would give me direction to listen to an entire album. Plus, I love hearing the perspectives of the women here. 😊

tamataFebruary 21, 2022

Listening to full albums is awesome! Artists often put a lot of thought into how they order their tracks (though occasionally some albums order tracks in awful ways) and sometimes you'll see a narrative or sound/mood-switch from one half of an album to another. Not to mention all the hidden gems that labels don't bother pushing but make it onto the tracklist. Anyway, I hope to see you in the posts!

I first thought the title meant current pop music, in which I have no interest, but this would be great!

Do you know Loreena McKennit’s music, OP? I loved her work in the 90s (last time I listened to music much at all).

tamataFebruary 21, 2022

Yes! I listened to a few of her songs, I'm pretty sure it was someone here on Ovarit who recommended her in some music post. She's great! She'll most probably end up on the list. (I haven't listened to a full album of hers yet)

Cool!

I would enjoy this! I'm really into the building blocks of rock n' roll/country/blues, so I would love to see artists like Sister Rosetta Tharpe, The Carter Family, Kitty Wells and Memphis Minnie discussed. I also love groups like The Shangri-Las and The Pointer Sisters. Suzi Quatro is also a great example of a woman who, while her band was all male, she broke so many barriers for women in rock and is a huge influence.

tamataFebruary 23, 2022

Sorry for the late response. I added all those names to my listen-list. The only ones I knew were Kitty Wells and The Shangri-Las. Thank you so much for sharing, I'm excited to listen!

KissMyOvariesFebruary 21, 2022

YES!

I’m looking for new (to me) music by female artists. I’d definitely love weekly discussions like this!

nopenottodayFebruary 20, 2022

Yes absolutely. I would love this.

[Deleted]February 21, 2022

Yeeessss please!! I personally find ABBA unlistenable so I’ll give that a skip, but love the sound of everything else. What do you think about female fronted bands who are all male aside from the singer? Im thinking Garbage - very strong female tones, but three dudes and a woman

tamataFebruary 21, 2022

Yes, I think I'll do that. I'll decide for sure once I begin the series, I imagine groups like that would fit in seamlessly. Garbage would be great!

KissMyOvariesFebruary 21, 2022

Garbage is misogynistic. I suggest not featuring them until you start running out of artists who don’t actively shit all over women. (They are vocal on Twitter about supporting the trans.)

tamataFebruary 21, 2022

Ah, OK. I'll look into that. Thanks for the heads up!

KissMyOvariesFebruary 21, 2022

Garbage….is now Garbage.

I suggest sticking with bands/groups who don’t actively shit all over women, at least at first. IMO I don’t want to be throwing down $$$ at bands that are female fronted but are misogynistic nonetheless.

[Deleted]February 21, 2022

Do Garbage shit all over women ?

velvetpawsBig timeFebruary 20, 2022

I like it:)
