someone suggested we make a thread for women who are curious about switching to menstrual discs, so here it is! I've been using my lumma disc for over half a year now and it's the best thing I ever did. I've tried cups before and hated the painful suction and having to fish around for something inside of me while I also cramped and bled and panicked. The discs have no tight seal to break and the one I use actually comes with a string so I can just yank it out like a tampon when I'm done. I think Pixie Cup even makes a disc applicator if you have trouble inserting it as well, for mobility reasons.
The biggest learning curve was probably making sure to push the front of the disc up over my pubic bone since that's what ends up holding it in place inside you. I think a lot of women have trouble with this aspect, which is why they leak. Once it's snug up over that little ledge above your G spot, it won't move. Making sure to size it right is also crucial. I use the medium (I believe it's about 5 cm wide) and it works great for me. I'm 24, never given birth, and I'm a lesbian. so I haven't done PIV either, for reference.
For evidence of leak proof-age, the second month I wore my disc I was on day 3 of my period and in the car with my mom when she got a flat tire. I got out, removed her tire, stored it in her trunk, dropped her spare tire, installed that on her wheel, all in the hot summer sun and without springing a single leak. This involved a lot of squatting and heavy lifting. I was sweating, exhausted, and dirty, but no blood! That pretty much sold me on the disc.
Of course there is the quirk known as auto dumping, which I can still do despite never leaking in other situations. This is when you're peeing on the toilet and you push extra hard so that the disc empties itself. It requires you to use the same muscles you use to pee, so there is no risk of it happening otherwise unless you're using the wrong size disc. I do have a very heavy flow so sometimes I do overflow like I would with a tampon, but really this is easily solved by just making sure to go to the bathroom and auto dumping it before that happens.
As for maintenance, I have 2 discs so I simply switch off and then boil them together in a mug for 5 minutes every 2 months. You don't need to use soap in between emptying it out, just rinse it off well. If you do use soap, use a mild, disc safe soap. Definitely always boil it between periods.
If any other women who switched to the disc want to share their experiences, feel free to comment below! I will also try to answer any further questions for those who are curious.
