Hi all,
I’m looking for supportive online spaces that focus on weight loss for women, or at the very least, are made up of a majority of women. I belonged to a low carb forum that had mostly female members, but it is now defunct, unfortunately. And, as we all know, the “sub” website that has driven most forums off of the internet is overwhelmingly male. I just cannot handle seeing another post by a guy who makes a post like “I gave up soda at lunch on the third Thursday of the month and lost 50 pounds! AMA.” Slight exaggeration (but, only slight)….anyone else who has visited those subs knows what I’m talking about. I miss the discussion aspect where people focused on support and you actually were able to get to know people a bit better. I really don’t like the progress pics there because it’s mostly just men drooling over women and it seems so misogynistic (progress pics on other weight loss sites never felt this way in the past).
My other reason for wanting to find a more female centered space is a bit more personal. I have never been conventionally attractive. About 10 years ago I lost a lot of weight fairly quickly and it really messed with my head. At first I liked the attention, but within a month or so I realized what was happening and I became very bitter. People, mainly men, were being nice to me because I was no longer obese, and I was a normal weight for the first time as an adult. I didn’t want this attention at all. I just wanted to be left alone. And so, I gained back all the weight, plus another 40 pounds. I am now on another weight loss journey, and as of today I am down about 30 pounds. However, I’ve been at a standstill for about 6 months now and I realize that I need to get my head in the game because I truly do want to be a healthier person.
I had a trauma trigger last week that caused me to go hog wild on the junk food followed by someone picking on the food I was eating (which is something I have never been able to handle).
Thank you in advance for your replies. It’s been difficult for me to write this, so I may not respond immediately. Please don’t take offense as I sincerely appreciate anyone who takes the time to respond to me. I just don’t want anyone to think I’m ungrateful if they don’t hear back from me right away. (It is oftentimes hard for me to ask for help.)
I would be interested in a supportive space. I have such a terrible relationship with food and eating.
I hope there's someone on here who has a good answer! Are you looking specifically for forums? I find that the female workout community that gathers around certain women who do tutorials (Caroline Girvan in particular) are all very supportive of other women who want to work on their bodies, build muscles, etc. Or how about a female-only gym? That is usually a space that allows you to work towards your goals in a healthy way while bonding with other women!
I would definitely participate in a circle here on Ovarit. I'm sorry I don't have any to refer you to.
Personally, I would love a supportive forum that was health focused instead of male gaze focused, because I have similar experiences of not liking the attention I received at a healthier weight. I really liked the body positivity movement until it got weird.
I found the women on XX keto sub Reddit to be really great. However, they’re total transmaidens and men are there (where aren’t they?, fuckers), AND All things considered, I do not think that the ketogenic diet is healthy eating, mentally, it’s still a diet and diet mentality which is pretty fucking harmful
This seems like something that would be perfect for Giggle. It's a social media app that only allows women (explicitly no trans women) and requires a facial selfie to confirm. It's processed using AI. It sometimes has false returns but they have a staff at the other end who work to approve people / kick people who are misclassified.
If you like I love to talk nutrition and have tons of recs for easy lower-cal, high nutrient meals and snacks that fit most cravings. Disclosure: I am whole food plant based, but obviously anything I recommend can be altered. But I find centering veggies makes weight loss fairly automated. (I eat huge portions and often am at a calorie deficit!).
So let me know if you like any info or chatting about it!
I don't know of any spaces. Hopefully someone else does.
I'm struggling with weight issues as well. I know what I should be doing but keep getting tripped up by emotional issues. In other words, the usual.
