Back in the 1960s, as a twelve year old, when I discovered Tolkien, I used to pore over those maps in the novels (I had the Atlas of Middle Earth, too). I always thought they were done by Tolkien himself. I'm glad Fonstad is getting the credit she's due.
And I didn't know she was responsible for McCaffrey's Pern series, too--which I read in my 20s, and also loved.
