TV and Mediawacky sex scenes in wlw movies
Posted April 8, 2024 by [Deleted] in Lesbians

I admit I have seen only two movies, but if even with the most acclaimed and praised one like Portrait of a Lady on Fire and no one mentions wtf was that?? can we assume it's just normal standards to have freaky sex scenes between women?

And I even love touching my armpits but why would some 18th century woman be putting weed into their hairy armpits?? Then it skips to uhh fingering armpits again I guess? In a very serious and emotional movie??

I'm so wary to watch other movies now like damn I need some content warning for this.

The other movie Elisa and Marcela, again serious, historical, and in the middle of being discriminated by their little town, and they play food with their body?? And two other questionable sex scenes I remember just feeling awkward for the actresses and I hate that.

Why do they feel the need to add "artsy" elements?

Gentleman Jack had lesbian sex scenes that I felt were pretty reasonable and realistic

I saw Portrait of a Lady on Fire, I don't really remember the sex scene tbh. They were fingering their armpits? Haha wtf

I second Gentleman Jack! I really loved that show and I'm sad it was canceled.

I was really sad that it got canceled

I agree about Gentleman Jack!

I think it was supposed to be symbolic but if you're showing it after the armpits of course I'm going to see that 😭 and it looked more like a butthole than anything else tbh

The armpit scene is about something called flying ointment and is a nod to the historical complexities of "witchcraft", a.k.a women's herbalism. It helps contextualize the main characters' relationship in a wider female-only sphere, which the women use to protect their erotic relationship, and is a juxtaposition against the anti-patriarchal but heterosexual use of herbalism to perform the maid's abortion.

This is great! Thank you for explaining this!

Damn that was interesting, and it does make a good contrast to the abortion plotline. It's a pity that, at least for the wiki link, we do not have direct testimony or art.

There is an SNL skit called Lesbian Period Drama where they make fun of the unrealistic sex scenes in Portrait of a Lady on Fire.

I feel just as freaked out as you!! I wish sex scenes in lesbian movies were simpler and more realistic... I'm not after the "artsy" (if it can be called that!!) aspect of it all, not even a bit! I will go as far as saying that I prefer NO sex scene (or like a fade-out to the next morning) to that sort of sex scene...

stickofgumApril 8, 2024

I much prefer when they just imply the sex without actually making us watch it

I can imagine so many scenes with simple poses that would be pretty and erotic if it would just focus on hands on the hair, wrist holding, eye gazing and just, nothing too extreme.

I guess it's the male gaze again but on a really weird spin lol. And the wacky scenes are added there, just to skip anyway to the next morning so really...what was the reason.

Same! So much better than that stuff!!!

Bruh, when I think of Portrait of a Lady on Fire the first thing I remember is the armpit scene lmao. I enjoyed the movie, but wtf was that hahaha

I like the portrait of a lady on fire and assumed the armpit was a metaphor for the vulva. Like, they wanted to show sex involving female genitalia without using actual female genitalia.

But yeah, my first reaction was shock then for my mental sanity I chose to believe it was a metaphor for vulva

Haha I loved the one in PoaLoF. If armpit drugs is the freakiest thing that happens, I am completely ok with that. Better than a lot of other things I've seen.

I think I would have loved if it was a romcom like even a work office set, or edgy kids. But an historical drama?? I can't imagine the weirdness for more modern stuff I am curious but I won't ask

I felt the sex scene in Kiss Me, a Swedish film, was realistic. I can't think of any others off the top of my head that I really liked, and I'm not home to look at my library. If I remember I'll post some more recommendations.

Please do so! I love recommendations, I have a hard time picking movies without some emotional attachments I guess, I'm trusting you all not to mentally scar me ahah
