TV and MediaBBC I Kissed a Girl - later episodes discussion
Posted June 2, 2024 by ScintillatingRuby in Lesbians

Has anyone watched this? I’m sort of hate watching this show, and this episode made me hurt to watch. Why don’t any of these young women know anything about lesbian culture, and instead are mirroring gay male culture?

The amount of leather, bondage gear, whips belts restraints etc… where is the feminism? Where is the challenging of misogyny, why are they just being misogynistic (referring to women as bitches, whores, sluts)?

Don’t even start me on how male gaze-y the party scenes are in particular - so different to the male version of this programme. Women rubbing thong-clad bottoms together? On their hands and knees in skimpy leather, whipping their hair, trailing whips across breasts?! Makes me sad.

Plus I have no idea why the host is being hailed as the ultimate gay icon, women all over her “amazing outfits” - I just wouldn’t care if I were on it, I don’t know any lesbians who would ooh and coo over cheap costume dress. She’s a mediocre second-best to her sister who likes gay men but was presumably forced into doing this show. She backed down after previously self-describing as “queer” by making sure everyone knew she is still 100% straight. She evidently dislikes lesbians from how uninterested she is, and how occasionally you catch her looking revolted. Just ugh.

This is the reverberations of Third Wave Feminism: pro porn, pro sex work, pro sex positivity, pro Poly, pro BDSM and pro Kink.

3rd Wave made a veritable Sexual Playground for men, but it did nothing to stop rape culture or DV.

Plus TIMs and Queer Theory in the mix have also shaped the sexual practices and language used by their Female allies.

It has completely shaped these women, you’re right, even though ‘tops’ and ‘bottoms’ just isn’t relevant to lesbianism. It made me so so sad and horrified - have written a complaint to the BBC.

I could feel when the producers prompted certain behaviour; they facilitated this.

This even happened in the r/ Bridgerton Sub which is a romantic drama-comedy show that takes place in the Regency Era of Britain.

They were words like tops and bottoms in describing Heterosexual relationships.

I asked why are you using the language of Gay men. Then I explained that this language was created to explain sexual practices that involved two people who had penis'.

Well said.

I wrote a post relevant to this subject awhile ago. Unfortunately, a lot of young lesbians have been raised on all the worst elements of “third wave feminism,” as u/GeneralLesbian said, and I’d hate to see the percentage of lesbians under 30 who would say having BDSM in a lesbian dating show is good representation.

This sounds terrible.

The idea that they hired a straight woman to host this is insane. But then again I feel like the whole thing is trying to court controversy for attention and they maybe just missed the mark because no one cares about lesbophobia

Mood... Seeing lesbians with long-ass nails and faces caked with makeup is enough to make me sad honestly, the leather outfits were the cherry on top. I don't know a lot of lesbians but I do wonder if 20-year-olds ones really appear and behave like that (like twerking and shit like that). Top and bottom discourse makes me cringe but it was even worse with that black cat and golden retriever bullshit-- what was that even about, i had never heard of anything like that before (i'm not from the uk nor the us so maybe that's why but...do y'all hear yourselves you sound so dumb 😭😭😭 is this a lesbian gender thing or a furry thing i don't even know) To me the conductor wasn't that bad but mainly because the only other lesbian reality I have watched was The Ultimatum and that was waaay worse host-wise, she was clearly uncomfortable and hating every minute of it, at least this one pretended lolol I def would have preferred a lesbian host but sadly I don't even expect it. Sorry for the long ramble, I have a lot of feeling regarding this show lol

I haven't watched it but I have a really hard time believing a lesbian would have long nails. I don't believe I've ever met one.
