Outer Space2024 Solar Eclipse
Posted April 8, 2024 by sylviasmushrooms in STEM

It’s today, and I’m not quite in the path of totality but my location will allow me and my family to view it at 97%. I know people who are traveling to witness this event, and have read that 50% of people who view a total solar eclipse for the first time cry, they find the experience so moving and powerful.

Are you viewing it today? What are you looking forward to the most? I’ve heard that animals change their behaviors and I’m hoping I can experience this, though I doubt our tarantula will notice lol.

Since the fullest totality we will see in our location occurs when my kids are in school, the school is distributing glasses and trotting everyone outside around peak. I’m a little nervous about my kindergartner not heeding the rules to keep the dang glasses on, but apparently the school has an “opt out” option for parents who don’t want their kids to view it. This is so weird to me. Who would opt their kids out of an experience you only have a handful of times in your life? And deprive a few staff members who have to supervise them during their “alternate indoor activity” of that experience? People who don’t believe in the sun? I’m confused as it seems very anti-science.

Anyway, please share plans and experiences if you’re lucky enough to be in or near the path of totality!

Great job! I harvested parsley out of a big planter not long ago and was really surprised how cold and snow tolerant it was from last spring to now I’ve kept parsley circulating.

I want to try some kale and baby book Choi in containers. You’ve definitely inspired me to give it a try! Your stuff looks so beautiful!

Yeah, I'm also very surprised! The other years when I've had parsley in planters they've been eaten by snails and birds, so this is the first year I see them this late. Does explain why it is in so many winter recipes :b

Aww, I'm glad I could inspire ☺️ I hope you have better luck with baby choi than I did. Kale is quite easy, but fertilize well and put a net over! Some kinds of lettuce also give at this time of year, and I imagine they'd be great for containers :)

Well done!

Signed, a total non-gardener

Aww, thanks ☺️

Welcome! :)

GenderHereticNovember 14, 2022

That looks beautiful! That will make some delicious winter meals.

JernsaxaNovember 14, 2022

Thanks ☺️ it did

This makes my soul happy! Would love to see any dish made with these.

JernsaxaNovember 13, 2022

Yeah, I felt like I could practically feel all the nutrients just looking at it :D I'll see if I can get a good picture ^^

JernsaxaNovember 13, 2022

Also, I love your name :b

GreenBeanJeanNovember 13, 2022

Thanks! Sadly I don't have any space for gardening but one day…

JernsaxaNovember 13, 2022

It's a good dream to have ☺️ I hope it will come true for you!

JernsaxaNovember 13, 2022

I went into the garden expecting to pick parsley and sage, maybe some kale if it wasn't too badly infected by white flies. But turns out we also had a beetroot, carrots and a bit of rucola :D I actually didn't think any of our carrots would succeed.

FeministunderyrbedNovember 13, 2022

Arugula loves cool weather. Nice haul!

JernsaxaNovember 13, 2022

Ah, thanks! I knew it wasn't called rucola in English too >< we planted some in late spring and managed to get enough for a salad before they bloomed. But now they're having a few new leaves :D

FeministunderyrbedNovember 14, 2022(Edited November 14, 2022)

Rucola is more correct, and I knew what you meant. I don’t know how the English pronunciation started. It’s one of my favorite things to grow—so easy, as long as it’s cool enough., and delicious.

JernsaxaNovember 14, 2022

That's confusing :b

Hmm, does that mean it would be best to sow rucola in fx September?

FeministunderyrbedNovember 14, 2022

I think my climate is pretty similar to Denmark’s. I sow arugula a bit before the last frost date and harvest it by June or so, then plant again in August or September, yeah. In summer it bolts.

JernsaxaNovember 14, 2022

That's great! I can use it after the main crop then! Time to re-do my plans for next year

JuniperiusNovember 13, 2022

Those are the most beautiful beet greens I have ever seen. Oh man I want to saute them up with some garlic and a little herbed vinegar for my breakfast right now.

JernsaxaNovember 13, 2022

Ooh! I saved them to figure out how to use them later, but now you solved the problem for me :D do you think they could also be stuffed and fried/steamed/baked?

JuniperiusNovember 14, 2022

That sounds amazing too!

JernsaxaNovember 14, 2022

I think I will give it a try tomorrow ☺️

I don't eat a lot of pizza, but when I do, I put chopped kale on top after the pizza is done. Super tasty. I just tried it last autumn because it was the only leafy green left in the garden at the time, and it worked very well.

JernsaxaJanuary 3, 2023

That sounds like an interesting winter pizza. Did the kale go crisp?

CaeruleaJanuary 3, 2023

No, I put it on after the pizza was finished and out of the oven. And some sour cream :) Very tasty

BlueToyotaTacomaNovember 13, 2022

Awesome job growing these!

JernsaxaNovember 13, 2022

Thanks ☺️

shewolfoffranceNovember 13, 2022

They look beautiful! What will you do with them?

JernsaxaNovember 13, 2022

Thanks ☺️ I will boil some green lentils with carrot, beet, onions, kale and a bit of garlic. Then I make a honey glazed hasselback butternut squash with sage and walnuts. I plan on having the lentil mix at the bottom and the squash on top, putting spinach on the edge and topping it all with a bit of feta and parsley ☺️

CaeruleaJanuary 3, 2023

That sounds super tasty. You have inspired me for this year's garden goals!

JernsaxaJanuary 3, 2023

Aww, that's really nice ☺️🌱 it was super tasty. And we ended up getting so full!

shewolfoffranceNovember 13, 2022

Parsley is an underrated herb! I think that sounds delicious.

JernsaxaNovember 13, 2022

I love parsley! Couldn't live without it in my garden. But it is also rather common in traditional Danish food.

shewolfoffranceNovember 14, 2022

I love a good parsley salad dressing!

Nediljka_OrwellNovember 13, 2022

Very nice!
