To start, please y'all let this post be for the fans and stay positive, I've seen too much hate and "criticism" for the show in recent days I need a break.😭
I'm so upset by what's happened. I genuinely enjoyed the show, first Star Wars thing I've seen in years. It was a new story, not just more regurgitated nostalgia bait and recycling the same character or doing cameos. We had a totally different landscape, that they could of absolutely jumped off of to create a whole new era.
The show was great in many aspects, definitely needed work in some others, dialogue was stilted at times and could be better all around, we needed more different acting for Mae and Osha(but I also think Amandla suffers from having too much of a pretty face, some people's faces just can't emote the way others can).
I loved Osha and the tragedies that make up her character. She's always wanted bigger things, she thought the Jedi would lead her there but they ended being another force stifling her, and in fact harming her. They were well intentioned but she's like the person who falls through the cracks of the system, because she doesn't perfect fit into it...and she never could've, they were directly responsible for her life going to shit and never allowed her to make peace with it by having access to the truth. Truly some gaslighting tbh.
I think the actors all did a great job, some more then others. Manny Jacinto put his whole arms and soul into this lol. Really fucking had me stumped how this could be the same guy from the Food Place, crying shame he can't show us more of this character. I liked how devious and seductive this version of a Sith was, and from behind the scenes interviews he was played that way on purpose. We don't have the almost cartoonish villainery of Palpatine or the angry abusive Kylo Ren. He never screams, his presence is powerful on its own.
The costuming was cool, the yellow Jedi robes looked fantastic. The lightsaber fights were some peak moments to me, hot damn. Some of the moves had me gasp, like when he impaled a Jedi on his lightsaber then just force pulled another one on there. Or headbutting a lightsaber with your cortosis helmet lol. Due was wild, truly crazy stuff.
The weakest moments of the show were some of the Mae moments, weirdly Osha's were pretty good. And the issues with Mae were just the way the scenes played out, long Alward pauses after she makes a threat, the fight scenes were some great martial arts though and kudos to Amandla for learning all that choreography, she had a tint double but did a lot. All the cast did.
Also it's a general tv thing for me but I don't enjoy the lighting in a lot of moments, colour and tone either. Like the bar fight in the beginning should have been dark and moody, would have done a lot for the scene. This is an issue with a lot of tv nowadays. The nature scenery shits were beautiful though.
I loved the witches, and the way that whole thing played out was straight out of real life police confrontations to me. It was definitely all sides making poor decisions but honestly one side was living their lives and the other was storming in. Ironically it all happened because they went against their Jedi teachings, Sol getting attached to the idea of a Padawan and wanting Osha to be his so badly( was even told he's too impulsive and not ready). Torbins fear getting the better of him. The witches fear in general making them act too aggressively in the Jedi's pov, but look justified in their own. It was truly one of those things, though I'm on the witches side sorry not sorry lol. My ladies were just trying to live their lives away from society and were even going to let Osha go.
I definitely think season 2 would have been better then the first, in the past we used to let shows marinate. The first seasons usually started off rough and the show got better. Imagine if we cancelled Buffy after the first season. Nowadays things get cancelled after one season, and we give them even fewer views the next time because we have no trust. Why invest in a show when it's going to get cancelled? It makes me angry because this has become the climate for all shows now. I don't need limited series, I'm tired of fucking 6-8 episode seasons. Just tell a story, I don't mind if it looks cheaper if you stretch it out.
I don't need a perfect piece of art, I'm here to be entertained. That's all I ask of tv, I'm sitting, entertain me. But a lot of this also comes from viewers, they give up on a show and then wonder why shit always gets cancelled. I genuinely applaud Emily in Paris for saying fuck you to all the internet hate( from ppl who would never gravitate to this sort of show anyways lol, sometimes the show isn't for you just move on damn).Worse is the truly awful star wars fans, it really is true. No one hates star wars more then star wars fans. The most bitter, dried up soulless husks I've ever seen in my life. The vitriol for this show has been insane, and yes it absolutely is racism and sexism. Don't even argue with me on that, there's not one video or google search I can see or do without running into these fucks. They actually review bombed the wrong movie simply because it shared the same name as this show. And they review bombed before even the first episode came out.
I can't watch a single video without all the comments being about how much they hate the show. The actors got so much hate, the showrunners too. It's just insane to me, they do this every time a show isn't about a man, a white man or what they consider their self insert man character. How many times do we have to watch mediocre tv for men and only do "perfect" woman lead ones for us. Perfect by their standards btw. They have their three movies or shows they accept as "good representation" of women and that's it. Like saying I'm friends with many women when you're accused of misogyny, or the same for racism.
They're out there celebrating the show ending and it boggles the mind. All you do is spend all your time ruining something the rest of us enjoy. And I hate how studios listen, how they give way to these assholes. I remember them completely rewriting The last Jedi to center more around Kylo Ren and the Reylo ship, because God forbid we center a woman on her own or a black man, and Finn was a fantastic character btw. Also they literally bullied Rose's actor off the internet and had her removed from the last movie. Like fucking damn.
I think that's what gets me the most. They don't let us have anything or enjoy anything. Every piece of media we like they tear apart. If we have an opinion outside of their accepted one they lose their minds. And usually I wouldn't care except it really does ruin your media enjoyment. Because the people in charge listen to them. They give up on our stories and our efforts just for these shit heads, again and again.
I enjoyed this show, I was immersing myself in the fandom. I had a great time watching and reading the fics on ao3. Loved the edits and fan art. Truly it was normal and like it used to be in fandom. If anyone wants to talk about the show I'm here lol.
