I grew up thinking there was something wrong and "immature" about me not being comfortable with sex scenes in movies. I am still uncomfortable with it as an old person. I'm bitter that it took me so long to learn that there is nothing wrong with me not wanting softcore porn to pop up randomly in my movies, especially when in the company of other people!
Exactly!! I remember when Game of Thrones first came out, I was genuinely so surprised to see so many people I know praising it despite all its blatant misogyny.
Voyeuristically watching actors fake moan and pretend to have sex is literally so unappealing. And I always feel so bad for the actresses since they are shown in such a sleazy and male gazey way. Like please I don't wanna watch that.
I think I'm just realizing this now in my life. I thought when I left Christianity i had to be the total opposite...basically how i became a "cool girl" by embracing sex and sexuality in everything and thinking that only a prude would avoid sex scenes and the like. I thought that i just felt uncomfortable with it because of my Christian conservative upbringing. Now I'm realizing the uncomfortable feelings weren't that but just a normal reaction to the oversexualization of media.
100%. I don’t mind intimate scenes where sex is implied as happening before or after the scene (when relevant for the plot), but I don’t want to see any of it. It isn’t necessary.
The one exception for me was Harlots, because I swear it’s like they wanted to make men look and feel pathetic with the sex scenes.
What bothers me about sex scenes is that actors are being asked or required to do for the role. Actors who may be in committed relationships, who may not be attracted to each other, and who may not want to deep kiss, fondle, or more with the other person nevertheless put on a show. Is that what we want to make others do, simulate sex for our titillation? Do we really want other people to reduce these acts to "just doing my job"? Maybe some actors enjoy it, but I certainly don't like to watch them, nor do I appreciate close-ups of various body parts in motion.
Call me a prude, I'll own it. I've been against most female nudity in films since the 80s because it's gratuitous, even when not sexualized. And there is very little male nudity out there. I think it was Michael Douglas who talked about baring his behind in a movie, but so what? Buttocks are nothing. If women have to go full frontal, then make the men do it, too, without a strategically placed object or with the camera filming from a distance or the room darkened. While there have been exceptions, such as Jaime's rape scene in 'Outlander,' scattered scenes in the first season of 'Game of Thrones,' and Kevin Bacon in "Wild Things," male nudity seems rare.
Your comment reminded me of this [interview] (https://www.nzherald.co.nz/entertainment/why-rising-90s-star-leelee-sobieski-bowed-out-of-hollywood/TTCSEI53NMLLGPWG4RCYBXSOCI/) of a now retired actress, Leelee Sobieski, where she talks about how gross she felt about doing such scenes:
Ninety per cent of acting roles involve so much sexual stuff with other people, and I don't want to do that," she told Vogue in 2012.
It's kind of a gross industry — well, they all are, when you examine them — but in acting you're selling your appearance so much. I would cry every time I had to kiss somebody, I couldn't stomach it.
"I would think 'I like this person, so I don't think they should pay me to kiss them,' or 'I don't like this person, so I don't want to kiss them'. Why is my kiss for sale?' It made me feel really cheap.
Honestly, I think about this so much. It's like there is a huge cognitive dissonance around this topic. I will bet you anything that the people who call us insecure or prudish or whatever would themselves feel uncomfortable if their spouse's job requirement suddenly required them to kiss and get naked and dry hump another person. Sex is great. But, such scenes are just a sleazy, voyeuristic and often degrading imitations of sex. I wish they weren't there. Nowadays, before I watch any film or show, I always make it a point to check out imdb's parental guide section for it. Saved me from watching so much crap.
And yeah, the disproportionately high amount of female nudity just shows how sexist all this is.
This reminds me of how a lot of folks mocked Kirk Cameron for having his wife stand in for his co-star whenever he had to do a kissing scene in the movie 'Fireproof'. I get not liking his hokey, fundie movies. But its really gross to mock him for having boundaries when it comes to kissing scenes and filming his movies so that the actors don't have to kiss a co-star if it makes them uncomfortable.
99% of the time, makeout and sex scenes are entirely unneccessary. And it sucks that women who want serious, grown-up roles in movies have to be open to getting naked and dry humping their co-star
I actually read about that many years ago. Yeah, I remember seeing people being all mean and mocking him too on the imdb message boards once... Like whatever happened to respecting people's boundaries?🤨.
Oh man I had such a crush on Leelee Sobieski! She was one of the first movie stars that made me realize I had feelings for women (her and Sarah Michelle Gellar!)
Let's be real none of the dicks shown in euphoria are shown sexily (male nudity isn't shown sexy), usually just as shock scenes or gross scenes so they can have an excuse of "eQuAliTy" like OP said, so they can shove nudity of teenage actresses in a "sexy" way 🤮
Women do want to see attractive male bodies. Of course there is demand. We just don't act like apes over it.
In the comments there someone referred to research that was probably this study but didn't have a link handy. Here it is: Sex Doesn't Sell Nor Impress – it was published 2009 and I see that everyone has really learned their lesson and backed off on the sexualized content. /s
(Actually, I think some people did pay attention – it's really important for projects aimed at wider audiences.)
Fake penises exist, but I'm pretty sure most of the time when an actor is nude it's his real penis. When a fake penis is used it's quite unusual.
Sort of like when Jessica Alba didn't want to appear nude for real, so they let her pose in her underwear and they used CGI to make her look naked. It happens, but usually if someone is nude, they're nude.

I was reading through that thread, having hope that reddit wasn't a cesspit like I'd thought, then I saw it was from /r/antipornography and not a main sub :(
Wait.... they are showing dicks in Euphoria?? Like, even if they're fake, that's way more than I thought they were doing.
I've been watching the Gossip Girl reboot and I thought the level of sex in that was pretty over the top for a show ostensibly about teenagers - don't get me STARTED about Max Wolf and his adventures - but it sounds like Euphoria is actually showing TnA???
Someone once pointed out to me that even in movies where the main couple are two men, female nudity is still the most common and sexualized type. Brokeback Mountain had a scene where the male leads were swimming nude that lasted a second or two. In contrast, both Anne Hathaway and Michelle Williams had scenes where they lingered on screen nude. I never saw Call Me By Your Name, but I've heard in that one as well while there are quick nude shots of the male leads an actress playing an underage, teenage girl is nonetheless shown on screen, fully nude for a very extended period of time.
Something about that angers me so much. Even when the women aren't even the focus of the story, even when not a single soul is rooting for them to end up happy, they're still expected to be decorations for the audience.
I am so fed up of this. Like I ranted in another comment, it is so painfully obvious that the female nudity is just there for titillation. But, pretentious people love to act like it is actually for art. Yeah right... I suppose they think that the fact that 90% of nudity involves young women with hairless supermodel bodies is just a complete coincidence. I once read an interview by a Game of Thrones actress where even she thought it was illogical for her character to have no pubic hair. But gotta meet those porno beauty standards, I guess
