Pointing out birth control pills have been linked to adverse side-effects and can negatively affect health is terfy now?

Okay then.

Carrots90April 7, 2022

Saying that artificial but same sex hormones could cause problems in uterus havers might misinform the uneducated masses to think that starting artificial wrong sex hormones at age 12 could be a problem

I mean they still don’t understand the female penis

And ultimately this would make some penises sad

Gould2022April 7, 2022

Apparently terfs are really just neo-nazi

Considering how woefully underfunded women's health care research is, I welcome any science-based in-depth dive into possible issues w/ our birth control. I've used the pill successfully and was grateful as hell for being able to have sex w/out fear of pregnancy. It also controlled my heavy bleeding, so I didn't fucking die from anemia. I'm a fan of the pill...HOWEVER, it doesn't mean that there aren't better ways to help women protect against pregnancy or control their periods and if we can keep moving in a direction that HELPS us without the awful side effects, that'd be awesome.

But helping women improve their health, well, that hurts some men's feelings, so maybe we just need to shut up.

God, I just get more and more angry when I hear these INSANE narratives from TRAs.

FutureApril 9, 2022

YES!! Why can’t we just discuss this important stuff without the TRA chat.

And Jezebel is a sellout pandering to whatever narrative is popular at the time. #boysaregirlsorwhateverpaycheckpls

butchpleaseApril 7, 2022

Everything that isn't a blowjob is terfy now.

nopenottodayApril 7, 2022

Yeah cuz that's what's important here. never mind the damage to both women's bodies and the environment from these toxic pills. let's make it all about men

One comment: > This review leaves me with a lot of questions about this doc, first and foremost what the filmmakers’ angle is. Is this a criticism of hormonal birth control from a woo woo “natural womanhood” perspective? A criticism of pharmaceutical companies? Far right natalist ideology masquerading as feminism?

Guess I’m far right now

SakuraBlossomsApril 7, 2022

A criticism of pharmaceutical companies?

Better not be this one either! Pharmaceutical companies entirely coincidentally are very supportive of the trans movement, so they had best not be criticizing them !

"Woo woo natural womanhood"

People have SUCH a fucking problem with women wanting to take charge of their bodies. Fuck whoever thinks that. I had every medical intervention possible when I gave birth - my baby died anyway and the whole thing ruined my life. I could have just given birth and let her die peacefully in my arms instead of torturing her AND me.

FutureApril 9, 2022

Sorry for your loss, it must be such an insult to you and what you’ve been through reading things like that.

I breastfed twins for 3 years, so I’ve spent plenty time in what they’d likely term woo woo natural womanhood circles. And while I’ve met women that would avoid hbc themselves, because of their bodies reactions, none would ever ban it.

Maybe there’s a uk/us divide in those circles, same as there definitely is in home ed circles (here it mostly seems ex teachers and social workers, whose own kids have some form of nuerodevelopmental disability and schools refuse to accommodate them, or those who realise educating their kids while they learn along side them on their farm or their art studio, works better for them. And home Ed here is heavily based around home Ed meet ups, shared Labour of mums taking the lead on different classes, and the kids -outside of the ones struggling with disability- seem to have better social skills/take exams early and do better etc US seems to be kids taught religious classes and not socialised with other kids. And unprepared for uni. Generally speaking)

goodyusernameApril 7, 2022(Edited April 7, 2022)

What you describe is very similar to the homeschooling circles I'm familiar with in my region of the US. I think it's been growing less dominated by religiously-centered folk for a while.

SecondSkinApril 7, 2022

Yeah, I meant it very generally, hence that disclaimer. But it’s a general description I’ve seen here from women in the US, with critiques of it. And that’s just not what I’ve seen from the home Ed landscape here at all.

jeannedeauxApril 7, 2022

No, we've got a pretty good secular homeschool community in the United States. Two groups of people originally got into it: very conservative Christians, and... hippies.

Yep.

John Holt is an interesting read. He was one of the early influencers of secular HSers.

sylviasmushroomsApril 7, 2022(Edited April 7, 2022)

Can confirm; I’m in my 30s and when I was being homeschooled it was a choice between hyper Christian people who thought dinosaur bones were a trick placed there by the devil, or antivaxxer hippies who wouldn’t let their kids go to the mall because of the “chemicals.”

Luna_LovegoodApril 7, 2022

We must never criticize anything that ensures men’s access to consequences-free sex, oh don’t you know

OneStarWolfApril 7, 2022

How is it terfy? Wtf?

La_TerfaApril 7, 2022

It's not focused on ladydique.

[Deleted]April 7, 2022

Well, if arguing against the Pill meant no TIM ever crossed a woman’s path again, I’d certainly consider doing it.

IshahchaiApril 7, 2022

From the article:

Consideration of this documentary can’t be done without addressing its laser focus on young ciswomen. The Business of Birth Control opens with the following statement: “The filmmakers want to acknowledge the use of gendered language throughout this documentary. While menstruation is experienced across the gender binary, the film itself specifically focuses on the historical and lived experiences of cis-women who menstruate. The emphasis on this narrative is not an intentional erasure of the men and nonbinary folks around the world who also experience menstruation. We, as well as those featured in the documentary, are always learning and seeking to do better.”

THIS is what makes it TERFy. G-d forbid that anything ever be centered on the biological reality of women.

Also, the author seems to believe the state of birth control is fine and dandy because the copper IUD exists for women who don’t want to (or cannot, as migraineurs) use hormonal methods. Great that it works for her, but my vagina just involuntarily clenched thinking about the time my body expelled the copper IUD. That was a blast and a half.

But sure, go on and willfully misjudge all the women who are demanding better birth control options.

[Deleted]April 7, 2022

Ugh, the copper IUD is super painful is all I have ever heard about it. I have metal allergies, so no good for me either. And migraines!

Women need to have all options on the table, and that includes informing women and their partners about all natural planning and barrier methods available. Most GYNs just throw hormonal contraception at you on your way out the door though. Sure they are more effective, but other methods are also effective when used properly-- something much less likely to happen if no one educates women about how they work!

FlamboyantWildfowlApril 7, 2022

the copper IUD is super painful

I didn't find it painful at all, but it did make my periods super heavy.

DoomedSibylApril 7, 2022

How the hell is menstruation experienced across the gender binary? Do people actually listen to what they’re saying?

So, when I was younger could I just have identified out of my PCOS? My painful, irregular periods? If everything biological is now a matter of opinion, can I identify out of having cancer?

This movement is proof that mass brainwashing is not only possible but happening. Yes, I know how tinfoil hat that sounds, but who on earth ever thought that girldick and male pregnancy, menstruation and breastfeeding would be actual talking points.

jeannedeauxApril 7, 2022

There's no such thing as a gender binary anyway because there's no such thing as gender. They're using "gender" to stand in for sex class, and no one in the man sex class has ever had a period.

DoomedSibylApril 7, 2022

I know this, I was just semi quoting the source material. I am against sex role stereotypes and try to call them that rather than gender (I learned to do this on Ovarit) to try and clear some of the confusion. Gender is conflated with biological sex to confuse people and obscure the issues. This is no accident, IMO.

[Deleted]April 7, 2022

Read a few times that any criticism of the birth controll pill was anti-feminist since women might feel remorse, stop taking the pill and get pregnant.

So we are just supposed to lie and say there are no problems with hormonal BC?

It's fairer to tell women the truth and to talk about potential risks and harms of hormonal BC. Many women will still decide to take BC pills because we don't really have something better. Others are willing to take the risk and switch to condoms. But I really don't understand how lying to women or withholding information could be any more feminist.

BlackCirceApril 7, 2022

Oh not TERFs!!!

jeannedeauxApril 7, 2022

Jezebel is a website named after a bad woman who murdered people. No one should be surprised they have shitty takes.

(I don't believe the Bible is literally true, but that's who she is in the Bible as a character, at the very least.)

AmareldysApril 7, 2022

Yeah we know
