Feminism is the movement to liberate women from patriarchy. We stand up for the rights of women to control our own bodies as individuals and to control women-only spaces as a class.
Women are adult human females. We do not believe that men can become women by 'feeling' like women or 'identifying' as women. We condemn the erasure of females and female-only spaces, the silencing of critical thinking, the cancelling of feminists and critics, the denial of biological reality and of sex-based oppression. We oppose the 'cotton ceiling' and the pressure on lesbians to have sex with men. Women are oppressed to exploit their biological sex characteristics, and women have a right to a movement that is about their own liberation from that oppression. We resist the redefinition of both "women" and "feminism" to make them serve men.
"Women do not decide at some point in adulthood that they would like other people to understand them to be women, because being a woman is not an ‘identity.’ Women’s experience does not resemble that of men who adopt the ‘gender identity’ of being female or being women in any respect. The idea of ‘gender identity’ disappears biology and all the experiences that those with female biology have of being reared in a caste system based on sex." –Sheila Jeffreys, Gender Hurts
"Men often react to women’s words—speaking and writing—as if they were acts of violence; sometimes men react to women’s words with violence. So we lower our voices. Women whisper. Women apologize. Women shut up. Women trivialize what we know. Women shrink. Women pull back. Most women have experienced enough dominance from men—control, violence, insult, contempt—that no threat seems empty." –Andrea Dworkin, Intercourse

That's quite a letter she wrote. Barely anything about why she's now Elliot and intense focus on attacks on trans people. She may as well have just said, "Look how special and persecuted I am." That's pretty much the point, right?
The letter wasn't personalized at all - it almost read like it was just stock copy-and-paste from the woke propaganda brigade. This is so fucking sad...
Right?? Almost has me thinking it's a PR move, wishful thinking I know but it really is awful to lose a prominent lesbian like Ellen.
I had to pause and wonder for a minute if this is PR. If she's getting paid for this by the trans lobby or something.
I can't believe how illuminati this actually sounds. It's like the whole of Hollywood has gone crazy. Is that the doing of scientology ? 🤔
I noticed that as well. It's the usual false statistics and persecution and very little about her "gender journey."
And she is scared of all the hate she will get...of course though she is getting nothing but praise about how brave she is. i think this is what annoys me more then anything. There is nothing "brave" about transiting.
Their heads are so far up their own arse they can't see the entire world bowing to meet their demands. What is really brave is being gender non-conforming and saying "I am female and I can do anything, be anything, wear anything and love anyone with no limits. A woman can be anything."
it's funny because i scrolled for so long trying to find a single comment that wasnt just brainwashed congratulations, and i still couldn't find any. theyre so narcissistic they genuinely think that 1/1000 people saying "hey this is concerning and sad" is hatred and violence lol
"Hate" here being a word describing sadness from women and mostly lesbians who are shattered by her deeply misogynistic and lesbophobic move.
"Hate" here being a word describing sadness from women and mostly lesbians who are shattered by her deeply misogynistic and lesbophobic move.
TRA's definition of hate is "less than total and absolute compliance", so there's that...
I've noticed that typically men who come out as transwomen talk about their gender journey while women who come out as transmen talk about persecution and statistics.
Everyone wants to be oppressed so badly nowadays. It's insane.
There are good incentives for doing so. I've often suspected that claiming enby status as a way of claiming trans status is a great way for toxic males to get out of having to assume any responsibility for patriarchy or the current lot of women - in a single declarative move, GC fems thus become the oppressor and must remain silent according to oppression stacking theory.
Man, I wish you were a sociologist and could legit study this because this seems like something that OUGHT to be studied.
In my experience this is often true. On the other hand a lot of women who identify as non-binary are gender non-conforming or don't fit the hyperfeminine male gaze concept of what a woman should be. It's depressing af
They don’t really want oppression. They want to be worshipped as little gods.
If they truly wanted oppression, they could move to China, NK, Saudi or many other places. They are spoiled western brats.
NPD is someone who feels absolutely worthless without constant affirmation. They need people constantly telling them they have value, but it's not self-value, but the completely lack of self-value that's the problem.
That's why so many people with NPD flock to social media for... "Validation". They project this onto others too:
The person struggling with Narcissistic issues cannot hold onto his or her good opinion and good feelings about someone, once he or she notices the other person has a flaw. The other person goes from being special and put on a pedestal to being devalued as “nothing special.”
Its just insane. I know people who have fled literal war zones because the theocratic government wanted them dead. I've personally been harassed by neo-nazis and my temple can't hold events without hiring expensive private security. Oppression isn't fucking cute and these wealthy White Trender-Queers need to stop appropriating it!
Bingo. She needs to stay relevant. She needs that persecution complex.
This was my kneejerk as well "Oh, her star is falling so she wants to play transmen."
Because it SHOULD be offensive for her to play women now. Except I somehow bet that it's not. I think this is a publicity stunt from the ground up, tbh.
Right? Should it not trigger their dysphoria to play a woman? Or are they going to be one of the ones who say you don't need dysphoria to be trans? Or that there is a lack of trans roles so they just have to take what they can get? Smh.
Apparently she will still play Vanya as Vanya. Who knows what her future will be though.
It can hardly be a coincidence that she decides she is gonna be a dude now that she is approaching her mid-thirties - the age when Hollywood trades in mature actresses for the fresher, more naïve crop. Is she afraid she is aging out of the quirky Tomboy/ gorgeous geek archetype? Transing is how she is gonna get headlines and stay relevant.
This crossed my mind too. I once talked to a TIF that said she was transitioning because she didn't want to age like a woman. More proof that transitioning often narcissistic.
BINGO! Her archetype has always been "quirky young cute nerd" and "manic pixie tomboy love interest". She's too old to play those roles now and there's precious little work for actresses over 35 in general. This publicity stunt is the perfect way to get her name back in the spotlight
And zero awareness of comorbidities that might be the actual cause of trans violence. Transphobia is a poorly evidenced concept to be so afraid of.
What political leaders? Who is working to criminalize adults making their own medical decisions? Who is working to deny their right to exist? Not even Trump has done that.
Omg no... one of the few (soft) butch lesbians left in popular media. I am honestly shocked that she has fallen for this cult. What kind of message is this sending to young lesbians?
I'm still reeling from this... I've had a big crush on Ellen Page ever since the Hard Candy / Juno era, and before she was officially out as a lesbian. She is exactly my type, and that's a type that I have seen disappear over the past couple of decades. Now to have a high-profile lesbian renounce and become a "straight man"? Further erasure and disappearance. Ugh, my stomach is sick from this.
I've asked this question before, but I'm gonna ask it again: "What will all of these organizations and celebrities do once this gender house of cards comes crashing down?" Will she renounce being transgender publicly? Will she quietly go back to "Ellen" and "she" while pretending all of this never happened? Or will she remain "Elliot" and "he," and hard-headedly tough it out when the public opinion has changed? Public opinion will change eventually, and these public pronouncements will need addressing. They are all really digging themselves into a deep hole.
The people who took hormones or are extremely invested in this will stick it out even when it’s no longer fashionable, and they will become very bitter that young people think this is all dumb. That’s my prediction.
Yes, my child will probably think the teens and twentysomethings doing this are incredibly stupid and "out of it."
I'm hoping you're right, anyway. I suspect you are.
She is 5'1" probably weighs 90lbs, she can't really believe she will transition to a man, right? More like a little boy. So sad :(
The usual. First few years as a 12-year-old boy, then when the body has had enough age and testosterone she'll transition into a garden gnome.
Transing into a boy is the intended effect IMO. She knows Hollywood (and the world) hates adult women, and she'd be aware of how TIFs look more like boys than men their age, so delaying the appearance of aging is definitely a benefit. And when she continues to age anyway, it'll be okay by then because men are allowed to age.
Same, had the biggest thing for her. Was absolutely delighted when she came out. This is so depressing.
I'm assuming some of them might repent and talk about how it has destroyed them. Some, and this might well be her case, might get caught in a whirlwind ; who knows what's going on behind Hollywood closed doors and what pressure might be put on those stars, especially GNC lesbians like.
I'm guessing if or hopefully when it all dies down many of them are gonna realize they fucked themselves up. I can hear the interviews from here.
Nothing good. It’s so sad, like watching footage of young men marching merrily off to the trenches in WWI. They’re living on propaganda and are in for some extremely unpleasant surprises. I want to help them, stop them running off the cliff but they’re out of reach. And, in many ways, just as doomed.
On the plus side, if she detrans in a few years, it'll be great media.
I have a feeling she will. This is a fad. It will die down.
If they don’t just act like it never happened. Alexis Arquette went back to being a man towards the end of his life, and considered himself “gender suspicious” (whatever that means). Hardly anyone knows about it.
True, let’s hope she doesn’t get cut up btw now and then.
She was out and proud, and now this? THIS?
the T should not be part of the LGB. never should have been. it's just galling.
this message of "our selves need to be endlessly curated and constructed, possibly surgically and chemically altered, in order to become truly 'authentic'" should never have been anywhere near the LGB pride message of "we're fine just as we are, we love ourselves (and each other) just as we are."
I'm not even that young (closer to 30 than 20) but it feels like such a punch in the gut. Seeing all the even vaguely gnc lesbians announce they're trans one after another makes me feel so depressed, like it's inevitable that it will be my future too
Nah, you seem pretty sane.
I have no intention to transition but seeing most people who look like you and you can relate to turn away from all the things you relate to and it just feels so lonely
Yeah, it really does feel like a gut punch. Two lesbian celebrities I really look up to rejecting lesbianism in the space of one year...I lived through the 80s and 90s when lesbians were considered freaks and it feels like we're going straight back there.
I think the thing is with fluid sexuality. People don’t even believe in lesbians anymore. People think every lesbian is a febfem and lesbians can’t decide who is actually lesbian anymore. Because of “fluidity”. I honestly think this is maybe even the main cause.
Out of curiosity, who was the other one?
I think comedy is having a small (masculine) lesbian revival... There's Work in Progress starring Abby McEnany, and Netflix has stand up specials for Hannah Gadsby, Fortune Feimster, Chaunte Wayans, and Sam Jay. Not to mention Ellen Degeneres, Wanda Sykes, and Tig Notaro are still getting specials. I thought with all that and Ellen Page being not feminine in her lesbian story arc in Umbrella Academy, we'd start seeing less... male gazey lesbians in media. But I guess not...??
Kate McKinnon’s out and proud and tbh I’d watch her eat cornflakes and read the paper.
Great list btw!
I'm shocked too. She seemed so grounded and I thought she was smarter than this.
The Left has succeeded in a few years what the religious right had been trying to do forever: eradicate lesbians
I said this to someone on IG, but it really feels like we're a dying breed. Young lesbians don't want to be lesbians anymore.
It’s so true. I work in education and have yet to meet a young lesbian who hasn’t either drunk the trans kool-aid or called themselves “queer” and may or may not actually be straight.
I’m straight, but I can only imagine how stressful and awkward it is to be lesbian, go through puberty, and feel like you’re alone in a world full of straight kids. And instead of women like Ellen Page being a role model for young lesbian girls, they are coming out as trans. We desperately need well-known lesbians and gay men to be visible for our LGB youth!
Any lesbian celebrities left at all?
This is literal conversion therapy.
Ellen, who's enemy number 1 for being not nice enough.
The backlash against her is so fucking weird. There are soooo many men in Hollywood who have done worse, and are even nastier than her, but of course she, a successful lesbian woman, is the one who gets shit on.
Men have to commit literal crimes to be nasty, women just have to be "mean".
No way Ellen isn't GC.
yeah she throws a lot of shade on her transgender guests.
I remember on r/GC someone talking about how they watched her interview on Howard Stern and she full out admits she doesn't understand the transgender thing. She's also like what, 60? So I'm sure that factors in as well.
If she is, I'd love for her to just own it. She's already been blamed for the fuckups of her company's HR department. And she'll forever carry a reputation as an uber-b!tch no matter what she does. She might as well take her Fuck You Money and go Full TERF.
Is this where the hate comes from? Insiders spreading shit about how mean she is (knowing it'll cause scandal as if it's a crime because she's a woman) because she dares to be a lesbian without being a full-blown TRA? So many male celebrities running shows, organisations, etc. are exactly as "mean" and much, much more than "mean", but a lesbian not doing her duty as a worker bee for the trans cause will seen as insolent and an outrage, no matter how powerful she is.
We still have Rachel Maddow ❤️
She's next I bet.
For some reason I doubt it. I can't even name why, I would just be dumbfounded.
THAT would break my heart.
I seriously doubt it. Rachel knows who she is. Honestly, I bet in real life Rachel would even be willing to have a conversation with a "terf", even if she didn't agree with her.
Jodie Foster?
Love Jodie. 🖤
I'm not a lesbian. But I would still cry if Jodie fell to the trans cult. I want to say she's too old for that nonsense. But that didn't stop Chastity Bono...
too old but also too smart.
so smart.
god she's so smart.
Same here, I adore Jodie Foster.
Sort of Kristen Stewart? She came out as bisexual, then gay. I've never heard her say she was a lesbian tho.
Kristen seems a little head-in-the-clouds about this stuff, I wouldn't be surprised if she came out as trans at some point.
I would’ve bet her first before Ellen Page!
I could see her maybe pulling a Sinead -- coming out as trans, then immediately backpedaling. "I'm like three-quarters cis, one-quarter trans."
Pretty sure she's bisexual
No she's not gay. When she called herself that on SNL she was trying to push gay as an umbrella term. She's stated multiple times that she's attracted to men.
Oh, there's also Samira Wiley!!
Tig Notaro
Ugh I love her! I love her comedy. I also like that she's kind of a normie and never dips her toes into woke shit.
Buck Angel has a video about her experience of how her lesbian community "turned on her" and felt betrayed when she transitioned. She noted that 15 years later "half of them had transitioned" as if that were some sort of ........ vindication? Rather than as evidence that there is overwhelming pressure for butch lesbians to either femme up, man up, or get out.
In mainstream society, there are two kinds of lesbians. The "hot kind" and the "gross kind." The Hollywood lesbians, feminine and suited to the male gaze, is celebrated in porn culture. The butch lesbians are gross. Ew. How could you. Vile. Disgusting.
Buck is usually honest and there are a lot of things I like about her. But she simply won't admit that once the world mistook her for a bearded, bulging-biceps man, the abuse stopped.
Screw Buck Angel. She says smart things from time to time. But at the end of the day, she still defends the porn industry and the idea that most butch lesbians are actually "men on the inside"
I think it's important to think about what women gain when they come out as trans. This will likely put Ellen in the news cycle for days or weeks, people will revisit her filmography and imagine how many interviews she'll get now. There's nothing less than fawning when you transition. I wonder how her wife feels.
She was used as a sexual jerk-off toy a few years ago, when the nudes of her virtual model leaked in Beyond: Two Souls. The title of which I had to search Wikipedia for, and someone needs to inform their gleeful editors that she’s going by they/them/their and not he/him/his, since they’re already eagerly on top of this. (Edit: apparently I was wrong, she’s going by “he/they”. That makes sense. /s)
Anyway, one wonders how much that little incident had to do with this, seeing as gaming fanboys will flat-out tweet you “I am wanking to ur shower scene rn wish u were here you woundnt b a girl lover long lol id make sure of that”.
That kind of violation is the sort of trauma that can lead a woman into wanting to disidentify as a woman for sure.
I would want to disidentify as human, geez
Ellen Page probably thinks she could have avoided that heinous Beyond Two Souls fiasco if she had "been a man" at the time.
Yeah I was wondering about her wife as well, specially if she decides to mutilate her body (although I sincerely hope she doesn't, luckily 33 years old is a bit late for puberty blockers). I hope she reconsiders...
The fact that she's chosen he/they pronouns makes me believe she'll recant and be "non-binary" down the line. It's a little out that says a lot. I would not put up with any partner becoming trans so hopefully if her wife feels she needs to leave she has the opportunity to do so.
How does "he/they" work? Can you choose second person singular masculine or third person plural as you like? In the same sentence? "They are outside working on his garden." "He likes ketchup on their burgers." It's incoherent.
Testosterone can do a lot at any age. Doubt she wants to lose hair though.
They never do. As a woman who’s been losing her hair since her teens, I’ll admit that I enjoy it when they realize that’s often one of the first masculinizing effects of testosterone, and that it’s not treatable or reversible in most cases.
She's #1 trending on Twitter - or, "Elliot" is anyway - with all the fanfare in the replies you'd expect.
Was it made specifically today to silence the Keira Bell huge victory?
I did wonder that. It's not a particularly impactful statement and looks a bit slapped together.
My first thought. Bell's win is also nowhere to be found in any section on Google News, while Page is the top story in Entertainment.
Probably.
I wondered that. The timing is incredibly suspicious.
That's what I'm wondering too.
I’ve been out of the loop for the last month; what happened with Keira Bell?
And underneath there's "startcisshaming" trending b/c of the Keira Bell lawsuit. 🙄
What lovely people. Nothing will help their movement better than “Encourage people to shit on others who are comfortable with the body they were born in”.
So their reaction to a young Black girl getting justice against the (mostly White) people who fucked up her body is to start a shaming hashtag?
So progressive.....
Yes because making women ashamed of being unashamed women is... woke? Somehow. I have a migraine and it’s been going for about 5 years now.
This feels like a harebrained attention-seeking ploy. I don't recognize any of the stuff she's been in for the past 5 years, so maybe she's trying to revamp her career.
The Umbrella Academy has been a pretty successful show for her, in the second season (which came out earlier this year) her character even had a lesbian relationship which was pretty fantastic considering how often Netflix prefers to trans GNC women/girls.
Well...
Gotta admit, when Robin was revealed to be a lesbian on Stranger Things, my first thought was, “Well, she’s a lesbian now.”
She is in Umbrella Academy now; where she plays a bisexual character.
Excuse me that's biGoTed bEcause bisExUal implies gEnder is biNaRY!!!!!
I hope her wife says "Fuck this noise" and leaves her.
Probably a set up for the inevitable divorce.
Let's be real, her wife is probably deeply into the whole TRA nonsense too
I hate letting this stuff get to me in real life but this fucking stings. her talking about finding her "authentic self" while rejecting her womanhood and lesbianism and sending a harmful, incorrect message to young lesbians/gnc girls that you cannot just be gnc, you must be trans or nonbinary or just other - anything other than the shame of being a lesbian woman, let alone a gender nonconforming one. and still, despite this terrible message she's sending, i feel so sorry for her too for falling victim to this homophobic, misogynistic cult.
I pray for the young lesbians seeing woman after woman just like them follow this path. I hope they know that there is no wrong way to be a woman or lesbian.
I was a gender nonconforming kid. And, even though I was straight, I still admired butch lesbians & androgynous women and saw them as role models (and fashion icons). Seeing so many of them rejecting womanhood makes me so sad for modern little girls.
Kids like me now have to worry if wearing trousers more than twice a week makes them a boy!
We already had so few of them. It's a surge of girls (and women) deciding they prefer being fake straight men than lesbians. What a message.
I’m honestly not surprised. Every time I’ve seen her post over the last year or so she hasn’t looked well. I do wonder if she has an eating disorder and mental health issues, which seem to be risk factors in women and girls deciding they’re trans.
I’m sure she’ll be declared as “stunning and brave” but I hope for her sake she doesn’t seek medical intervention. Cross sex hormones have a devastating effect on womens reproductive systems and they cannot be reversed. Plus there’s the awful double mastectomy.
I feel sad for her. I don’t think she’s ever been comfortable as a high-profile lesbian and I wonder if part of her just doesn’t want to be a lesbian woman anymore.
I agree fully with this take. She never really wanted to come out and definitely has eating and mental health issues. Body dysmorphia goes hand-in-hand with gender dysphoria, all of which are understandable results of living as a woman, especially a high profile woman, in the patriarchy.
As a straight woman, I never really understood the need or the pressure to come out. Like...I just don't understand how it's anyone's business. Why does someone need to announce who they're attracted to or dating or what they like to do in the bedroom? I just don't get it. Feel free to fill me in if I'm missing something, my perspective on this is obviously limited.
Straight people also announce who they're attracted to or dating or what they like to do in the bedroom. Every time you mention a boyfriend people know you like dick. Because you are part of the majority it isn't marked.
Coming out serves a purpose. Straight is the default, and if you're a lesbian and you want people to stop assuming you're straight, it's in your best interest to make it clear that you're not. Otherwise, most people will assume you're straight and you'll be forced into a lot more uncomfortable situations and misunderstandings. As a lesbian, I find it exhausting sometimes, especially living in a state where almost everyone is a member of the same religion and can't even handle a little gender nonconformity, and wonder why you're not married by age 22.
It was very much about strength in numbers, solidarity, being visible to your fellows and making a stand politically. You know the adage: the personal is political. When it was so much more dangerous and less accepted, even illegal, it was an act of rebellion and revolution to come out and be proud (or at least refuse to be ashamed).
There’s a similar kind of vibe around being an out GC or Radfem. Look at the difference women like Magdalen Berns make, JK Rowling, etc. they make it a bit easier for the rest of us to be brave and see that you can be true and take a stand. That you’re not alone and you’re not wrong.
I would absolutely believe she has an eating disorder and body image issues. She was 20 years old when Juno came out, and her pretend baby bump was everywhere in 2007.
Fucking devastating, honestly. I saw it on the Twitter trending section and it didn't click. I thought, hmm, I don't know who Elliot Page is in the Umbrella Academy. Must be some clout-chasing extra. But then finding out it was ELLEN? Damn. The cult got her good.
Absolutely tragic, but I reckon this will peak a significant number of people. She's incredibly high-profile.
if they make her character trans, I am not watching the show anymore.
They probably will. After all, forcing Elliott The Stunning&Brave to play a gross, cis lesbian will trigger his dysphoria and force them to kill himthemselves!!!!!
ROFL
We are losing a whole generation of gay and lesbian kids to the trans cult, and world-famous LGB celebrities joining the cult will just convince more and more kids that they need to change themselves to fit in. It's fucking depressing.
I mean I know she was important but really.. she's not exactly an A-lister.
Also every child has a sexuality at like six now, and they have to tell you about it, and they're pretty much all pansexual or bisexual.
She's an A-lister among LGB folks, at least.
She’s pretty prominent among young people after Juno, X-Men, etc.
Yeah I was gonna say, she may not be an A lister but I can't imagine all that many people not having heard of her
