Just have to vent, I am so angry here. At home, day off from work, knock on front door so answer, local Councillor putting flyer in as our local elections are next year. I thought it was a strange time to canvas, and I know the game here currently is to canvas when most are out so they don't get doorstopped with questions, so decided to ask what she thought a woman was!!
She went down the anyone who says their a woman is a woman. I said wrong and proceeded to tell her what that attitude is doing to sex based female rights, and that she as a woman was participating in the demise of our rights. I got so angry I ripped her flyers up and handed them back saying there'll be no vote. Needless to say she was not a happy camper, but I didn't give two fecks. I hope other women are willing to pull her up for her betrayal, but somehow doubt it.
Good.
It’s one thing to have men support this crap, but another to see how many women have turned handmaiden over it
I unfriended an old high school friend the other day over his JK Rowling memes. And it felt good to do so. I tried to stand up for her but all his TIM friends got histrionic in the comments so I said “I’m on Team JK and common sense” and unfriended.
Good for you. These clowns need to be confronted and shamed. This woman is trying to sell out other women for her own personal power grab. She'd probably sell her own child if it got her an inch closer to power. It's disgusting behavior and she can't just creep around people's homes in hopes of avoiding any form of accountability.
I would have had so much satisfaction doing that. Good for you! I used to give money to various Democratic politicians, just $25 here and there. When they send their begging emails and texts I am going to tell them exactly why I will not be voting or donating to them. Additionally that I will never forgive them for this.
I did the same with my patrons and newspapers I support. The Guardian's money goes to Reduxx now
Great! My ACLU contributions go to WoLF.
WoLF, Ovarit, and Reduxx are the only organizations i trust enough to give money to right now
Thanks for the comments and lovely words of support. I've calmed down since the incident. Unfortunately I am now definitely politically homeless. The political parties in Ireland are all completely captured, and unless some independents run locally and nationally that align with my beliefs and that I can vote for, then I'm afraid I'll be spoiling my votes as a protest.
I would follow up by very publicly tweeting about it and then tweeting all candidates the Staliand questions and advertising that your vote is up for grabs for whichever candidate will publicly commit to being transparent and standing up for women.
And then ask other women in your area their opinion on this on sm.
(I’m long banned from Twitter but this in my in person approach and it’s rare I don’t find others agree with me, so it’s not as insurmountable as many think prior to speaking up).
Once you start speaking up the sense of relief quickly snowballs and the fear of what anyone thinks disappears.
In Philly we vote tomorrow and the majority of the candidates are unappealing to me as a radfem and an educator. I’ve always been proud to vote because I come from a long history of women activists, but now it just seems so shitty because no one really represents my rights anymore. Go you for standing up to that politician!
I have done that before, though not from my own front door. Crossed paths with the guy as he was coming down my neighbour's driveway. Asked him the Staniland question and he was floored. I gave him several references, including Helen Joyce's book. He was not elected and I have no idea if I got anywhere, but at very least he got a different pov.
Omg YES!! Powerful . 💥 Thank you so much for doing what we all wish we could do right in their faces 🤣🤣🤣
They need to know that voters aren't accepting this passively. They constantly do stuff knowing that we won't be motivated to demand differently even if we don't like something. Letting them know that they have seriously crossed a line and we won't be passive about this is a good thing.
This is more a rave post but I understand what you mean. I almost got into something with a voter registration guy in my building.
Kudos to you for ripping up her flyers. I hope she learned something good.
You did the right thing. Maybe she'll peak one day and look back fondly on your moment of justified outrage.
Good for you!
I don’t see why we’re supposed to support the same women who are fighting so hard to take away our rights and basic safety.
Anytime you don’t, they try to gotcha you with “That’s not very feminist of you”. As if we owe that to the people destroying our protections?
Sorry, you fought for feminism to go to men now. That’s what you’ll get.
Good for you! I just hope the little handmaiden isn't vindictive enough to use your information for nefarious purposes. Hopefully the worst she'll do is whine on Twitter about how: "THIS TERF LITERALLY TRIED TO KILL ME!!!"
Good Job! IThe more they hear of that, directly, the more they might, just might, take that back to the party headquarters and tell them what they have been hearing.
We have been canceled peremptorily, afraid to speak up, to friends, family, co-workers. Our silence has contributed to the mistaken notion that we agree. You are a star for asking that question, and railing at the non-answer.
