QuestionBuffy Saint Marie
Posted October 29, 2023 by OldSaltyLady in GenderCritical

There is a scandal going on in Canada right now about a prominent native performer and activist, Buffy Saint Marie, who has been outed as being non-aboriginal. She is actually an Italian-American who threatened her family with false accusations of child molestation to keep her secret. People are outraged.

This has got me thinking. Why is appropriation unacceptable when it's race or culture? but perfectly acceptable when it's sex/gender. Buffy Saint Marie influenced how people viewed aboriginal women with her activism while racking up money and awards (even the order of Canada). When men appropriate females they too change the way that society views real women and divert funds from women's issues. Why is this not outrageous?

I'm inconTERFo, but I've never once used that horrid mockery that is the current LGBTQARGSUV flag. That's my tiny rebellion. Rainbow flag or nothing. If only we could go back to the LGB without being labeled a hate group haaa....

pennygadgetMarch 15, 2022

But how am I supposed to know that POC are allowed to be gay & lesbian if you don't put black and brown stripes all over your rainbow merch!?!???

Lipsy•_____•March 15, 2022

And tsk tsk, no yellow or red chevron thingy for AAPI or Native/First Nations peeps. GURL I FEEL SO EXCLOODED as a pacific islander tho!😭😭😭 i guess it's a good thing i'm straight ahahha

If you hetero and identify as "agender", "allosexual" or "asexual" you can stand under the rainbow. A LOT of youths are doing that now.

Lipsy•_____•March 15, 2022

soooo... i feel like i don't get "agender".

What I mean is, I'm an ardent gender abolitionist—and every written definition of "agender" i've ever seen seems to click very well with gender abolitionism! Except for that part where it's clearly been fashioned as a thing under the trans umbrella. Except then that contradicts all the written definitions (how can you do transgender if you don't even do gender)? Somebody gotta help a gurl out here.

Doesn't help that I've never seen an actual firsthand account from anyone who actually IDs as "agender".
All the idpol intuition I have flows from examples set by specific individuals, so, i still have zero basis to intuit what "agender" is or isn't.

But yeah! Gurl wut? What's the difference between "agender" and anti-gender/gender-abolitionist? and how is any identity that disavows or marginalizes gender possibly subsumed under transgender?

SakuraBlossomsMarch 15, 2022(Edited March 15, 2022)

As per trans ideology, agender typically means they aren't feminine OR masculine! Versus your average non-binary which may be both or some type of mixture. Sometimes they use agender to refer to people who think gender theory is a joke and understand that they have only ever called themselves woman or man because of their sex, as though to rope us into an ideology we don't believe in by prescribing us a gender, albeit agender.

Since gender is a social construct, I don't think a person can actually have a gender. You can match a gender, i.e. the social norms and behaviors associated with one of the two sexes, but you aren't actually that social construct itself just because you match it. For instance if there was a woman who 100% perfectly matched every single behavior and trait assigned to the male gender where she lived, and none of the traits of the female gender, she'd still be 100% a woman, equal to a woman who perfectly matched the female gender. She wouldn't be a man even if she was everything the "man gender" entailed. That's why it's such a joke when TRAs suggest when we say "woman" we were referring to the gender all along and not the sex, because it's never worked like that.

And thus the term "gender identity" was created, which is whatever you fEeL like. Or something. My preferred way of distancing myself from this ideology is something along the lines of, "LOL, you have a gender identity? Yikes!"

Accurate AF

[Deleted]March 15, 2022

I gather this is a shot from Seinfeld, but a real shot would be more accurate if it was a woman hauling Jabba Levine along.

Lipsy•_____•March 15, 2022

ahha i had no idea what show it was from😅 just knew it was right on the nose.

[Deleted]March 15, 2022

The bloke looks like one of the Seinfeld (I think) characters. I’ve never watched it.

Lipsy•_____•March 15, 2022

i've literally never watched tv, American or otherwise baha.
(Although I'm the right combination of shockingly meme-literate and good at stealth learning on-the-fly so that lots of my friends have no idea!)

[Deleted]March 15, 2022

You’re ahead of me, I used to watch British and a little American TV until a decade or so ago.

SamuraiGhostCatMarch 15, 2022

Too bad Michael Richards (Kramer) is a racist who repeatedly shouted the N-word at a black man in the audience at his stand-up show. (It was filmed and everything.) He used to be many people’s favorite Seinfeld character before that.

His actions/words rightfully ended his career, long before “cancel culture.”

sojourner_truth_March 15, 2022

I'm feeling really old, reading the comments from posters who have no idea who Kramer is, don't know the show Seinfeld, and can't remember when Michael Richards went crazy screaming "He's a N****R!" at a man in the audience at his comedy show. God, the disappointment I felt when Jerry Seinfeld went on an apology tour in his defense. It's hard to overstate how important this show was in American pop culture. Lots of things we say in daily life actually came from this show, and many other shows followed in its footsteps.

SamuraiGhostCatMarch 15, 2022

Jerry Seinfeld is a shitty person. He screamed at a waiter (who told him he was an idol of his) because the waiter tried to shake his hand!!! (Jerry is a germaphobe, but that’s absolutely no excuse.)

This was all caught on camera, on his show, Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee. His guest that episode was Bill Maher and they were at a diner. The kid (waiter, likely a teen or just barely an adult) was crushed. :(

Bill did not condemn Jerry’s behavior. They’re old friends, but again, that’s no excuse. I lost all respect for both comedians after this happened. (Not that I had much in the first place, but yikes.)

sojourner_truth_March 15, 2022

Yup, Jerry Seinfeld is a well documented shit bird. He's shitty to his fans and has been for quite some time. A friend of mine from NYC actually ran into him and just smiled and said Hi... it's not like she did anything strange, but he was very shitty when he snubbed her. There are a lot of celebrities in NYC, so it's not unheard of to run into one. But he apparently treats his fans way worse than most other celebrities do. He's been known to be extra shitty to black fans too :(, and his wife stole another woman's book whole cloth. It was a cookbook of recipes that have vegetables hidden in the ingredients, for toddlers.

Never meet your heros!

Lipsy•_____•March 15, 2022(Edited March 15, 2022)

I'm young enough that Seinfeld is legit 'before my time', but, in my case it's rlly not an age thing—it's a complete ignorance of TV. I've never lived in a house with a television set or a subscription to any tv online, so, 🤷🏽‍♀️

If it makes you feel any better, as the daughter of a widowed non-American father i have also successfully reached young adulthood with a cumulative knowledge of 0 English-language fairy tales, 0 English-language nursery rhymes, and 0 Disney movies (...and tbh i am thoroughly convinced i'm all the better for it).

and if THAT doesn't make you feel better, i actually AM pretty well versed in Americana of the '50's,'60's, and '70's🤪 (after almost two years of shuttling groceries to a network of local high-COVID-risk folks, most of whom are Boomers or Silents, and lots of whom are legit friends by this point).

Having my age guessed wrong by fifty years or more is not an uncommon experience for me on Twitter.
Forget it Jake, it's Lipsytown.

bojackieMarch 15, 2022

You are right, better to grow up without Disney. Nice to meet you, btw. I'm Latina and I live in west Africa so I can relate about not fitting in!

Lipsy•_____•March 15, 2022

well so... i'm guessing you aren't from one of the W. African countries with significant Latino roots? (Angolan Portuguese, Cape Verdean Portuguese, São Tome e Principe Portuguese, or Equatorial Guinea Hispanic)
...guessing mostly because you'd have at least a historical cultural framework to 'fit into' in Angola or (Goddesses forbid) Eq Guinea, or a still pretty much current one in Cape Verde or ST/P

also guessing you're not in Ceuta or Melilla... because as a Latina you'd blend right in there (i think those two are actually part of Spain proper). And because I can't imagine anybody referring to the northern coast of Morocco as "West Africa" baha

so... okay imma make a WILD guess... Diplomat kid living in Nigeria? Cuban ancestry? 🤔

sojourner_truth_March 15, 2022

Wow, what an interesting life you've led so far.

Lipsy•_____•March 15, 2022(Edited March 15, 2022)

Ahhah that reads like such a backhanded compliment (even though i can tell it isn't)... I like you 💖

sojourner_truth_March 15, 2022

Just to be clear I was in no way giving a backhanded compliment. I was being genuine. I don't say catty things to other women like that. I know it's hard to read tone over the internet, but hopefully you believe me that I was just being genuine.

Lipsy•_____•March 15, 2022(Edited March 15, 2022)

Absolutely crystal clear that you were being genuine and literal (i even edited that last comment at the same time you were replying, to say exactly this). And thank you for your kind words sister!

FWIW most of my best friends and i have "finding and pushing all of each other's buttons" as a love language—and, when I'm around a table with all my sisters, conversation is practically a competitive sport—so, when I say backhanded compliment, I actually mean it with nothing but love.

Lipsy•_____•March 15, 2022

Did something... precipitate that? i mean I'm not excusing it (wouldn't be remotely possible to excuse), but, was that at least an escalation of, like, something?

(lawzy it took me a while to think of a word to substitute for "trigger", which is too compromised these days to use)

[Deleted]March 15, 2022(Edited March 15, 2022)

If I remember right, he said he was being heckled by a group of young black and Hispanic men. He made a comment about the "stupid black and Mexican guys" who wouldn't shut up and they took offense, as did many other audience members. People started booing and that's when he started the racist rant. He not only used the n-word but talked about wanting to l*nch them as well.

You'd think that someone who had been a comedian for 40 years at that point would be able to handle a bit of static from the audience. And someone doesn't just go from 0-100 like that so it was no shock to anyone when it was found out that he'd made racist comments before.

Lipsy•_____•March 15, 2022

Smh... Probably just no accountability for decades, to where he grew a fatal case of hubris and that was that

SamuraiGhostCatMarch 15, 2022

The man was just booing him or criticizing his act, because he sucks at standup and isn’t funny.

It’s worse than I thought... omg.

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2006/nov/22/usa.danglaister

His words are blacked out because it’s EXTREMELY offensive. Click the black parts to reveal:

Richards, 57, took exception when some black audience members talked during his act at a Los Angeles comedy club on Friday. In the recording, Richards says from the stage: "Fifty years ago we'd have you upside down with a fucking fork up your ass."

He then proceeds to insult one man with a succession of racial epithets. "Throw his ass out. He's a nigger! He's a nigger! He's a nigger! A nigger, look, there's a nigger!" Richards says.

In a television appearance on Monday night, after news of the tirade broke, Richards apologised, telling host David Letterman - who was interviewing Seinfeld star Jerry Seinfeld - that he was not a racist but had lost his temper.

🙄 NO ONE who fucking yells that shit at a black person is non-racist. There is absolutely NO FUCKING EXCUSE.

"I was at a comedy club trying to do my act, and I got heckled and I took it badly and went into a rage," Richards said. "For me to be in a comedy club and flip out and say this crap, I'm deeply, deeply sorry. I'm not a racist. That's what's so insane about this."

No, what’s insane is that he fucking lost his temper over people criticizing his jokes. Can’t think of any other comedian who yelled that shit when people booed them on stage.

If you want to cringe so hard you’ll need physical therapy for months to come, look up his apology on the David Letterman show. It makes the modern day YouTuber apologies look classy and authentic.
