I'm a big fan of JK Rowling's Cormoran Strike series but I don't know anyone else who reads the books, so I sometimes browse r/cormoran_strike. Every so often I come across a post like this and I'm always shocked by the overwhelming support for our Queen. Read and enjoy if you have the time. All the stuff you wouldn't agree with is "comment score below threshold" lol.

Reminds me of the German Pen&Paper game "The Dark Eye". There's the goddess of honourable duels whose holy animal is the lioness. I guess her clerics are those who answered that they could wrestle a lion, lol.
(Or perhaps those US women did beat mountain lions who attacked their children and know they can?)
Never thought I'd see DSA mentioned here! I imagine even Rondra's clerics wouldn't fight a lion unarmed though, to be fair. Or well, at least I'd hope so.

All the way up to goose, these people are delusional. And geese might be smaller, but I can tell you a swan will beat the ever living shit out of you. They hit you with their necks, which are as thick as a baseball bat.
Geese are the honey badgers of the bird world. We have a flock of Canada geese walking distance from where I live and one day I was driving back to my place and one of them attacked my car. I love them, they're beautiful birds and they aren't always aggressive, but I'd never want to get on one's bad side.
A goose tried to mug me once. I was feeding the ducks at our local lake and one of the geese got round behind me and tried to take the bag with more bread from my pocket.
However, swans are more evil than geese. I think I could take on a goose, but not a swan. They can break your arm you know!!! 😄😄😄😄
That made me remember once a woman feeding the ducks in St James’s Park and a goose that kept biting her bum for more food!
Geese are rude AF. I remember teaching my 2 year old not to mess with them. I was deadly serious and he could tell!

I could see people beating the goose and the two after that, but a pitbull qualifies as a "medium sized dog". Do these people think they can beat a pitbull with their bare hands? A chimpanzee could literally rip your face off. An eagle has two inch talons that it can sink into your face or neck.
I guess I personally think that if an eagle has 8 of it's 2 inch talons embedded in my face, I'd be in too much agony to "win".
Absolutely right. I think most "medium sized" dogs would win if it were bare-handed combat to the death. Especially the pitbull types.
My whippet is a "medium sized" dog but I'm not sure about her. She is puny but her jaw is VERY strong and her teeth VERY sharp. Much stronger and more damaging bite than anything a human could manage with our relatively weak jaws and very weak hands.
A lot would depend on luck. If she managed to get her jaws to my neck she could rip out my throat and I would be dead. However a man with enough upper-body strength might be able to get his hands to her neck and break it. But first he'd have to get past the jaws.
I think it would be close.
I think the eagle should be below the medium-sized dog on the list. I would take an eagle over a dog any day. Yes, terrifying talons, but small light bones. Could mess you up but kill you? When you're fighting for your life? Not convinced.
Ugh, don't get me started on people way underestimating how physically outmatched they are by their pet pitbull until it's too late.

I was attacked by a swan when I was a kid and I have been scared of them ever since--along with similar sized birds like geese. It's not instant panic any more, but I am happy to give them a wide berth, but also you know how people react usually when you say you are scared of swans?
I am also wary of swans, as a pair attacked me and my then-boyfriend. (I wrote about it in another reply here). They are huge and loud and fast.
How do they react? Everyone I know is aware that swans are very dangerous animals. No joke.
I heard swans can break your arm with their wings.
Fortunately, all the swans I have encountered yet were very peaceful. Of course, I wisely refrain from getting too close to their young.
(I've watched parents in Kew Gardens let their toddlers walk close towards swans who had young. Some people ...)

If you have a stick, a wolf or smaller is something you might be able to take on, provided that you manage to protect your neck. But without a stick? Your teeth would have to be able to get through the animal's natural armour, and with a bear ... yeah, good luck with that.
My college boyfriend's parents had a small pond in their backyard that was claimed by 2 very aggressive swans. They chased anyone (human/animal) away if you came anywhere near the shore.
Once, they swam all the way from the other side, got out, spread their wings, and started charging us just for the crime of walking in the yard near the pond. They are massive and scary.

Humans just aren't very well equipped, apart from their brains and the ability to make tools/weapons. Without tools/weapons we would be stuffed against most of these animals.
In Canada, we call our geese Cobra Chickens.
The only people who mess with the Cobra Chickens are the young and foolish.
It's crazy to me how many people don't understand that physically, pound for pound, humans are an extremely weak species compared to almost every other vertebrate (and quite a few invertebrates). We use tools and brains to make up the difference, but even much smaller animals can wreck you if they have a mind to.
Yes absolutely right. Not only are we weak, but we are very badly endowed in terms of natural weapons. Small teeth. Weak jaws. No talons/claws. Bad hearing.
Stuff we are good at: physical endurance & brainy stuff.
Stuff we are bad at: everything else.
I don't want to fight any animal. Not worth the hate and anger and violence. I'll fight a man to the death though.

I assume people have different ideas of what "beat" means.
It could range from "intimidate enough so that it flees" to "kill without getting injured yourself."
And rats can bite, so escaping unscathed is not a guarantee. Plus, you could die from infection of the bite after killing the rat.
A human can yell and frighten an elephant away if they're lucky. (Villages with elephant problems use fireworks to great effect)
Kill an elephant without any weapons? Not so much.
I'm amazed that more people think they'd be able to take on a large dog than they'd be able to take on a Cobra. Kangaroos and Chimps would be easier to take on than dogs too. Dogs are fucking scary. Our dog obsessed culture seems to forget just how dangerous dogs are.
Right. Dogs are very dangerous indeed. Even the medium sized. Even some of the small ones (a terrier could rip your throat out, no problem).
The veneer of domestication is very thin indeed.
I'm not sure about chimpanzees though. They are very strong, very vicious, very clever, with a bite as bad as a dog's.

Geese were a common sight on campus when I was going to college, and you had better believe they would chase anyone who got too close. Even if they didn't have young.
Upon discussion with my husband (eagle: no, medium size dog: yes), we posit that the participants misunderstood the question as "with bear hands" and those participants were actually bears in disguise. Probably wearing hats.
I'm surprised that rat, cat, and goose aren't closer to 100. And I'm really surprised that many women think they can't 1v1 a goose. Lmao Like sure they're aggressive jerks, but they're not going to kill you, and honestly very unlikely they'd even seriously injure you. I'd much rather fight a goose than a cat.

I would run from all of those animals on the list. While I am pretty sure I would survive a fight against a rat, why get bitten if I don't have to?
Since I am not a cat owner, there's no necessity to wrestle an enraged house cat to get it to take a bath or swallow medication, so even knowing the cat-caused death rate of cat owners is pretty low, I wouldn't risk it.
Did the people who think they can beat a grizzly misunderstand the question and didn't notice the "unarmed" bit? I mean, in Germany, there's hardly any bears, I wouldn't be surprised if some people weren't quite aware just how big those are, but in the US?
And what does "beat in a fight" mean?
Most of those animals might retreat if you yell and wave your arms, but have you beaten them in that case?
I do not doubt that elderly ladies in Romania have managed to beat bears and wolves with brooms until they retreated, or that farmers in Africa regularly force lions to retreat from attacking their livestock armed only with sticks.
But in a fight to the death, where the animal does not retreat ... and not armed with anything, not even a stick ... things don't look so good for the human.
I think the premise has to be forced to fight Colosseum style. I would never willingly fight any animal! For the reasons you gave... The only advantage we really have without tools is just size vs. some animals. And a lot of them would still be too strong.
