Comedy died because a bunch of folks who don't know shit about comedy decided it should: "punch up".
Fuck I hate that stupid term. Comedy is supposed to comment on the status quo of society. It doesn't create the status quo it only comments on it. But because comedians ended up the last people in society saying anything about the status quo to idiots it looked like they were the villains and therefore required "be kind" rules like "punch up".
I'm old enough to remember when women comics were almost unheard of and it was a widely repeated mantra that "women aren't funny". At the same time, so many jokes were deeply deeply misogynist, from the incel-type all women are gold diggers, to the hateful mother-in-law all older women are dried up useless crones. Punch up came from that, but was very quickly reclaimed by misogynist men, often in lipstick. You know, like Women's Studies in college.
It seems like the 'punch up' narrative says a lot about the weird, disconnected mindset of the people who have made a vague, generic idea of 'oppression' their cause but don't...quite...get it. That it's taken on faith that you can 'punch' those with more power than you and they won't 'punch' back, harder. Because 'that would be wrong.' That the powerful are expected to just put up with getting 'punched.' I see this play out in the real world when, say, 'activists' who spend all day calling the cops fascists are legitimately shocked that when they actually assault the police during a protest or something they end up actually being arrested. That they assume they occupy some kind of sacred cow status where there will never be any real consequences for their actions, whether being ridiculed for being ridiculous or arrested for committing crimes.
I don’t know much about Ricky Gervais but I love his Oscar speeches. I’ve never seen any other Oscar content but his speeches and I like that he takes celebrities down a peg, even though I’m sure he can be just as bad as the rest of them. He has a kind of brazenness I admire.
This is partly due to the fact that comedians are not non-profits in need of donations. It really shows that the captured are in fact paid for: https://trans-truth.com/follow-the-money/
And so does everyone else. The difference is that he makes so mich money, he wont be cancelled.
I'd like to see the pile of his rape and death threats compared to JKR. Just for funsies.
Thank god indeed for comedians like Ricky Gervais. I may not like everything he does, but he gets this right.
He is hilarious, not sure I would want to be the target of his sarcasm, but watching it is fun. I remember watching him on the Golden Globes, I was laughing so hard I was close to tears.
