QuestionTIF's, health issues and dying young
Posted September 22, 2024 by Runawaysiren940 in GenderCritical

I've noticed a small trend of tifs dying relatively young, (Liam Johns and Griffin Sivret) and I was wondering if anyone could point me towards more cases. I've also noticed that when trying to research adverse health outcomes for tifs, far more papers come up regarding mental health over physical. It feels similar to my research on violent tims- the info is bound to be out there, but google reinterprets any search to be trans favorable.

I'm going to restart my gym membership and get back on the Strong Lifts train. I loved how strong I felt during, and this COVID lockdown has atrophied my muscles.

Has anyone tried Strong Curves? I see it's meant for women, but it seems like it emphasizes growing a big butt over becoming strong.

girl_undoneMarch 1, 2021

I haven't done Strong Curves (I kind of used Strong Lifts as the basis of my lifting plans) but I'm not going to hate on the hip thrust thing, I think it was a good innovation.

I love Strong Lifts. If you do Strong Curves let us know. I'd be curious how it compares to Strong Lifts.

@fallingwater just gave a great overview of her experience with strong curves here. Now you don't have to wait for me to try it out.

Thanks!

Part of the reason I lift weights is because I want maintain overall fitness, so if I go rock climbing or backpacking or have a heavy day landscaping, I can do it with ease. I'm very pleased to hear about the inclusion of upper body.

I started reading the online book and the first parts were all about dat ass, so I lost interest. Thanks for filling me in on the reasoning behind it.

I'm working on eating more protein. I've been tracking my food intake and I was blown away at how little protein I was eating. I'm also reading Roar by Stacy Sims and it's been really eye opening. So much fitness advice treats women like little men but we are SOOO different.

That's such a great book. And yes, we are so different from men. Sometimes I wonder what it would be like to not have to think about where I am in my monthly cycle when I go into the gym.

This Ted talk by Stacy Sims was a huge eye opener for me in this respect - period has a huge influence on our bodies in regards to training. She also mentions the Fitr app - really interesting tool, worth a download

Really? Is there anything from the book which stood out to you?

SouthpawMarch 3, 2021

I'm only halfway through the book. The whole book so far is fascinating. She really delves into biology and how our hormones effect our training. I like how she says that women NEED to be lifting for strength. The 1980s mindset of working out with a 2lb weight won't cut it. After age 40 all the cardio in the world won't really change your lean muscle mass but heavy lifting will.

She gave this example which shocked me: 40% of women ages 55-64 couldn't lift 10lbs. That number jumps to 65% for women ages 75-84. I know a lot of women post menopause that can hardly carry a few bags of groceries. For some reason that factoid really jarred me.

After a lifetime of swearing off running, I very unexpectedly took it up last month. Working my way through C25K (currently on Week 3). I even have Strava now. Who have I become?

Going to restart Nike Training Club on my non-run days after a lazy Feb of avoiding it.

Doing yoga Mon-Thurs nights. I've begun squeezing in two YWA vids a night to make up for my part-time yoga schedule.

Got back in the saddle at the weekend for the first time since last Nov and realised how much I missed it. Cycling just lifts my soul, man. When lockdown ends, I'm going to join this women's cycling group in my city. I just love it!

AlectoMarch 3, 2021

Quarantimes have changed us all.

[Deleted]March 18, 2021

Wow, I am seriously impressed by your running efforts!

Also got in to cycling over lockdown and hoping to find a women's only cycling group (wish me luck...)

1.) I'm going to try doing yoga on a daily basis, even if just for 10-15 min a day. Trying Adrienne's 30 Days of Yoga course: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=ZSIp00SewO8

2.) 16k to 24k steps a day

3.) 4 to 5 kettlebell classes a week

4.) Eating more intuitively, while still trying to hit 110-120 g of protein a day

5.) Getting through the following books on my list:

Exercised by Daniel Lieberman (good interview with him here https://www.npr.org/sections/health-shots/2021/01/21/959140732/just-move-scientist-author-debunks-myths-about-exercise-and-sleep)

Good to Go: What the Athlete in All of Us Can Learn from the Strange Science of Recovery by Christie Aschwanden (podcast interview here https://www.outsideonline.com/2391411/christie-aschwanden-good-to-go-recovery)

Breath: the New Science of a Lost Art by James Nestor (interview https://www.npr.org/sections/health-shots/2020/05/27/862963172/how-the-lost-art-of-breathing-can-impact-sleep-and-resilience)

girl_undoneMarch 1, 2021

Wow, that's impressive!

eyeswideopenMarch 1, 2021

I'll be lucky if I get even half of these done 😅.Thanks for posting the parent though. I find it helpful to keep myself accountable. 🙏

AlectoMarch 1, 2021

16k steps every day? Wow!

eyeswideopenMarch 1, 2021

I wish I could do those steps running. I'm about 20 lbs too heavy for that though. Some day (hopefully this year)!

AlectoMarch 3, 2021

If you're doing that many steps a day, you'll get there in no time.

My goal for this month is to go back to doing pilates regularly, starting with once a week. I know it's a pretty modest goal but it's been years since I've done any.

[Deleted]March 18, 2021

*it's a realistic, achievable goal and it's 100% more achievement than last week so keep - it - up! :)

Tez_MorenaMarch 11, 2021
  1. Getting started... which I should have done last March, lol, but better late that never.
  2. Just one week and I lost 2 kg. Got my husband to support me. He is not dieting himself, but he is the one that cooks in the house, so he began making healthier dinners for us without me asking. I so appreciate his support.
  3. I have started walking 5 km almost everyday. I tried the couch to 5K app, but I quickly realized my body sort of had to get reacquainted to walking again first. So maybe I'll try it again in a month.

I just did my first 20 mile ride on the exercise bike. W00t! Did it in just barely over an hour. So close to averaging 20mph, but the big climb on the Ocean Lava Cliffside Loop in Zwift slowed me down and I never could quite catch up completely.

But still - 20 MILES!

TansyteaMarch 14, 2021

I finally joined a gym last week after months of thinking about it. I absolutely love it already, so glad I finally went for it. I'm already fairly active with a physical job and several short hikes a week. I will never be small, and that's ok. But I want to be strong!

goldenheartccMarch 31, 2021

I set my new 2 rep max for deadlift at 200 lbs! Later today, I am attempting to turn my current one rep into my two rep max, of 210! I also bagged my first 200lb squat, TWICE! with good depth (I managed a partial rep of it, but then ended up dropping it on the safety bars a couple months ago) so I am SUPER stoked. now I am just gunning for a new bench 1RM, since it's always been my "strong" lift instead of my "strongest" lifts (my shoulders take forever to get stronger but we are working on it)

girl_undoneMarch 31, 2021

Congratulations!

lilSealGirlMarch 17, 2021

I did a LISS workout today! It was a lot of fun.

slendernanMarch 16, 2021

Gyms are closed in my country, other than through some gymnastics that kinda skirt the current laws and I can't get my gym card reinstated. So I've been wanting to start running again, but my motivation had hit an all time low - how do you motivate yourselves?

[Deleted]March 18, 2021

I was stuck with exercise motivation for years - I was really patchy with HITT and then I watched this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E6HuD2a3xQ4

That day I bought a bike and now I cycle 5 to 6 days a week and I run out the door after work like a little kid. I call it "play time", I'm obsessed with exercise and honestly I wouldn't be able to do this if I was aiming to get "motivated". I enjoy it and that's what gets me on the saddle, not schedules or plans or forcing myself.

slendernanMarch 21, 2021

Two years ago when I was running daily, I had the same attitude as you - the run time was exciting time, and sometimes when I'd come back from a run, I'd feel like going out for another run again right away. It was so much fun. But then I hurt my knee and had to take a break, and got messed up emotionally by a man (heh...). Ever since then, I wasn't able to go back to it consistently.

I'm wondering now if it's not because I'm associating running with him, since he was also a runner and that was the common ground we found.

That vid is very much correct, now that I watched it. If it's not fun, yeah, you won't be able to do it consistently. So I guess I should more find a way to disassociate running from the man that hurt me, so I could enjoy it again. :(

[Deleted]March 21, 2021

Hmmm I appreciate that it must be hard to try re-frame it in your head if emotions are involved.

However, do you think the running was exciting or was it exciting to run with company?

If it was the latter, you could try find a women's running group and say to stupid brain when it reminds you of man, "Thank you brain but shut up".

Running is your experience, in your head. External man is external force. Evict him from the mental treadmill! Good luck, you can do it :)

hufflepuff-poetMarch 21, 2021

Make my step and my heart goal as often as I can, so far I've been making steady improvement every week.

Build a more consistent yoga practice. I use yoga with adrienne and her find what feels good app and want to do one of her monthly themes all the way through.

I'm proud of how I'm getting better at listening to my body and asking what she needs.

TokenmomMarch 7, 2021

Staying active during my pregnancy. Also, tentatively get my running mileage back up. Between a minor muscle strain, a streak of cold ice and snow and first trimester fatigue I basically stopped running for a couple of months then got really lazy about any kind of physical activity, and now I'm feeling it.
