QuestionGender Identity in Other Languages
Posted December 2, 2024 by Lillith in GenderCritical

Hey everyone! I'm curious about how the concept of gender identity and pronouns is dealt with in languages other than English. In English, when gender specials want new pronouns, all the work falls on others "she/her" but the gender special gets to keep saying "I/my" as they always have. I wonder how this works in other languages where gender is built into the grammar, like Russian. For example, in Russian, verbs are feminized in the past tense depending on the subject's gender, so that would require extra work for trans people to navigate. Are there any other linguistic quirks in other languages that make this even more complicated or that have led to shifts in how people navigate gender identity?

I wonder if perhaps, the challenges inherent in more gendered languages have led to different expectations around TIP interactions.

Also, if you know of any non-English websites or forums that are like Ovarit, I'd love to hear about them.
