The mission of R-Ladies is to promote gender diversity in the R community
I've read their about section, and it doesn't say what "R" means. It doesn't say what the fuck this organization even does.
The organization aims to support all underrepresented genders, including but not limited to cis/trans women, trans men, non-binary, genderqueer, and agender individuals. The organization received feedback that not all underrepresented genders identify with the name “R-Ladies”. In April of 2024, we, the R-Ladies Global Leadership Team, opened the “Re-branding from R-Ladies to R-Ladies+”
"We received word that the NAACP makes white people with dreadlocks feel excluded. So we're changing the name to 'NAACP au lait' to make them feel less excluded!"

R is a coding language. It's useful for doing statistics. This includes visualizing them in really nice ways. Here's the Wikipedia article.
I hate R
I actually love R/R studio, very useful for the kind of biology I work on. But that R ladies+ thing sounds like a steaming pile of misogyny.
Also in biology, but I prefer python. It’s not due to the R community aspect, but that doesn’t help.

Not surprising, but still annoying.

In April of 2024, we, the R-Ladies Global Leadership Team, opened the “Re-branding from R-Ladies to R-Ladies+” GitHub issue to address the organization’s need to be more explicit about our mission to serve underrepresented gender minorities beyond cis women ...
The gender specials complained about the name “R-Ladies”, and so the group is going to keep the name and just add on a plus sign. So the issue isn’t just the word “ladies”. It’s that someone wants attention, and now this organization is spending volunteer hours and energy devoted to this rebranding instead of supporting women and girls in STEM.
this irks me
underrepresented gender minorities beyond cis women
and what of actual minorities of women? once again, transwomen are elevated above actual women, for not being women. if transwomen were actual minorities they'd be acknowledged and promised change but quietly put to the back like women of color are
Men with chokers are hardly underreprisented in the field of coding....
They make up 50% of what reddit says is a "woman"
Exactly! What about helping Black women feel represented? Or giving opportunities to poor women who may not have had access to technology growing up? Offering training to incarcerated women?
Nope! The first priority is pandering to white dudes in drag!
underrepresented genders
... in the R community. Hilarious.
As someone in a tech-adjacent field, I can attest that it's not uncommon for women's tech groups to face an inundation of TIMs and for the actual women to feel uncomfortable and leave, ruining groups that are meant to support real women who are critically unrepresented in tech. Women represent about ~20% of data scientists (although the actual percentage is much, much lower because there are so many men larping as women), but a lot of companies are patting themselves on the back and claiming greater parity because some male data scientists have thrown on lipstick and declared themselves women. Fuck this group for selling women downstream.
Omg. Im waiting for the day cheeto guy makes it so companies have to report tims as women.
Too bad he got rid of equal protections for real women.
Men had to take that from us.
Do TIFs get offended by being called "ladies+"? Not that TRAs would care so much about TIFs anyway.
Also, I just bought an iPhone 16 plus and had no idea it's actually an Android! /s
They co-sign it.
No corporate Slack with a channel with "women" in the name has escaped this ouroboros tail-eating in the last 5 years.
Slack being a companywide chat room so you can bring your whole self to work.
Oh bloody hell. I joined one of these ‘R’ groups as I heard that it would be useful for stats. Never mind!
Whatever this organization is, they're about to fold.
