If you give someone one little piece of control, one little thing they can do, they will gravitate towards that little bit of control.

'Kids have no control over their life. So we have to look after them, we make sure that they don't make bad decisions.

'If you allow them to have this one avenue, a lot of them will take it just because it's a bit of control.'

based and reminds me of so many other things, like drugs and fashion, what happened to music? kids used to identity with that and adopt the fashion to be their tribe, now thats all gone, apart from a few retro kids discovering punk and jazz theres no new music trend in that way its been replaced by the fashion of gender identity.

Technology seems to have destroyed music subcultures. The music industry and music media were tastemakers for most people, and even the people who reviled the mainstream could still find music subcultures that existed on the margins.

Now the music industry plays it extremely safe, which means the mainstream stuff isn't creating any subcultures (the closest thing right now might be Swifties, but that doesn't seem to be a "tribe" in the way goths or punks were). And even the marginal subcultures seem to be dead, likely because of a lack of smaller music media, such as zines, and club culture not being as much of a thing anymore.

are we sure its not the ease of access and lack of physical media?

people like stuff, people like owning stuff, collecting stuff, trading stuff, hunting out rare stuff, gloating about their stuff. thats all gone, its not just music the same has happened to film, no one cares anymore its boring no ones going to the cinema its no longer a treat, people are turning their backs on streaming services now they have realised its all a load of arse. theres no interest in it, new thing comes out, click on it, done.

Nintendo understand how people tick look at pokemon and the mechanics in Animal crossing, they know how monkey brain works to keep people engaged, yet the film/TV and music industry don't seem to understand human nature, its all pops mart blind boxes now and "causes" to protest about and wave a flag for.

I think there are a whole bunch of factors, and the deprecation of physical media is definitely one of them. If you bought an album you really love, you're likely to play it when friends come over, maybe you'll even make a point of saying "Listen to this. It's really great." But starting up a playlist on Spotify doesn't have that same appeal. There's also a problem with most people having fewer friends than they did 20 years ago, and a lot of people have virtually no friends at all. Having friends will also likely impact whether people go out to clubs or concerts.

Records are making a comeback, so maybe things will turn around over time, but it's pretty dire right now, especially for teens and young adults who seem to only have "gender" as a subculture.

Refreshing take.

I hope this angle becomes more common.
