Below is a poem I wrote some years ago now, I share it now as a parting âgoodbyeâ for all the brilliant, brave women of Ovarit.
There are so many familiar names and it has been such a lovely, women-centric community - I have laughed A LOT, cried on occasion and definitely learned so much about true feminism and sisterhood over the years Iâve frequented this site.
Iâm not sure Iâll use any other platform so...goodbye sisters, goodbye Ovarit, thank you for everything.
What is a woman?
The clothes we wear?
Perfect makeup and styled hair?
The purse we carry?
Lipstick?
Heels?
Stereotypes and gender feels?
NO.
We are women,
In blood and bone,
In every organ and chromosome,
We are women,
Born, not bred,
NOT an idea in a sick manâs head,
It doesnât matter how you feel,
Woman is not your word to steal,
Our bodies arenât yours to appropriate,
Our female biology is innate,
You bully and push and colonise and take,
But feelings do not a female make,
We are women, female, distinct from you,
No amount of terror can change whatâs true,
WE are women, strong and proud,
Lies are lies, however loud,
The truth WILL out, the cult will fail,
Women are female, NEVER male.
I like it, but she spelled âchokedâ wrong.
Also, it's strangulation instead of choking! I didn't know this before but choking only refers to something blocking the airway from inside. Strangulation is outside pressure.
I know, this has been on my nerves too, but I think itâs just casual language when they mean it in a sexual context, plus, strangulation sounds... purposeful?...
Honestly... at this point, Iâd be tempted to rebut people who want to âlet women be feminineâ by saying something like, âActually, youâre right. If certain women choose to be maidservants to men, why not let those women lap up all that âsex-positivityâ and âfeminine powerâ, while everyone else chooses empowerment via going against the flow? Someone has to do the grunt work of placating men, after allâmight as well let the ones who enjoy it do itâ.
Pretty inflammatory, but I think it gets the point across.
I dress in a very feminine way, but I rarely catch any flack for it. When I do, it's usually from men and butch lesbians.
It's crazy how much women go to bat for men and the patriarchy.
