RaveMy conservative dad, women, refugees, and the Hamas attack
My dad is conservative, 73 years old, pro-Isreal. We got on the topic of the Hamas attack. He was coming from the perspective of just being pro-Isreal basically and somehow also began talking about how the US needs to never accept any refugees and those liberal idiots want us to blindly accept everybody when we might bring in terrorists and crime lords, just look at the Muslim men, look at what happened with the Hamas attack, etc.
I chimed in and said we should only accept women and children. All the problems you just named, dad, are male violence. These are all men's wars and men's crime syndicates. These are all male-centered religions and holy wars. And look at what all these men are doing to women and children. Are the women and children mass raping and murdering?
My dad was silent and then just said. "You have a VERY good point there. I had not thought about that".
We bridged into other things and fifteen minutes later he just blurted out. "Wow. I'm still thinking about what you said. That is a REALLY intetesting point. I hadn't thought about that, Philogynist."
This happened one more time before we ended the call. It really just shattered his perception.
It's a perspective I've read on here often and seems so basic to me now. But it really resonated with my dad who does not think from a feminist praxis and certainly is by no definition a feminist ally. It was just refreshing to listen to him deeply consider a radical feminist perspective and not only agree with it but witness it totally shift his total window of reality for the duration of the call.
