I am unmarried and I am childfree- I have nothing against children or the people who have them, I just do not wish to be a mother myself and the notion that women without children are either to be pitied or hated is a key part of my feminism’s fight.
Unmarried women aren’t necessarily called selfish very often- at least, to their faces. But as we all know, the money we spend is always on frivolous things, because they’re for us and perhaps if we had a husband to make happy, we’d find more meaning in our lives than just, you know, making ourselves happy.
Childfree women are called “selfish” in the same way that homocide is called wrong: The only time it’s acceptable is when you had no other choice; otherwise, what the fuck is wrong with you, are you a psychopath? The apparent “selfishness” of childfree women is evidently so vast that it inspires overheated nausea in far too many people. The sheer selfishness of these women. The selfishness.
If we define selfishness correctly as an indulgence of oneself or demand of others’ attention and resources at the cost of others, this does not make sense. The hypothetical children of childfree women do not exist. (Unless you consider adoption, and the people who rail against childfree women sure as shit don’t for themselves.) How can one be “selfish* if the ones one is supposedly hurting with one’s selfishness are nonexistent? You more as well argue that eating Lucky Charms is selfish because it hurts leprechauns.
Of course you also have people telling you that it’s not so much that you’re selfish towards your imaginary children, but rather, against a hypothetical man who wants them. You are “selfish” for not giving up your body to his seed, your life to his progeny. As far as I’m concerned, any man who is deprived of his supposed God-given right to impregnate me can easily find another willing woman who wishes to raise children with him. Oh- but should he really have to?
Women aren’t selfish. Women are thought of as “selfish” when we are not sacrificing ourselves. Our mere existence as perfectly harmless beings is offensive when we so much as think of ourselves.
How many people call childfree men “selfish”? Why is he permitted to go about his life peaceably because he’s hurting no one, but a woman is apparently hurting others by simply living for herself?
