RantThe Plight of Orthodox Jewish Women - The Agunah Crisis
Posted March 8, 2024 by MischievousMaydel in WomensLiberation

I want to inform you all of a little-known crisis happening to women in the Orthodox Jewish world. This is unrelated to Israel. Disclaimer: I am Orthodox myself and it's times like these when I REALLY have to reconcile my conflicting values of religion and feminism. I'm not here to debate that in this post though.

For a Jewish marriage to end, a man has to give his wife a gett, a divorce document. The idea behind it was supposedly to protect women, since she is required to accept it. Basically, a man can't just leave his wife without her permission, which would have obvious consequences for her as it would be difficult to remarry. In a time when women relied on their husbands for things like money and housing, it would be a crisis for a man to just leave his wife. Nowadays, this gets twisted. If a man wants to coerce (or just plain abuse) his wife, he can hold the gett over her head. He doesn't have to give her a gett just because she wants one. If he wants money, or to "fix things," or full custody of the children, etc. he can withold the gett from his wife, and keep her chained to a dead marriage. Women lose everything trying to gain freedom from their husbands. A woman chained to a dead marriage is called an agunah.

Why don't these women just walk away and start new relationships? If a married woman commits adultery, not only is it a major sin in itself, any children born of the forbidden relationship will take on the status of a mamzer. A mamzer has many restrictions, the worst being that they can only marry other mamzers. Also, mamzer status gets passed on for multiple generations. Of course a woman would not want to put her child through that. The other option is to just leave the community entirely, but of course, that is not easy or possible always, not to mention a good chunk of women want to remain religious otherwise, as they still believe. As for the men who remain married? They are technically not allowed to take additional wives, but this is a "modern" (within the last 1000 years) rule instituted by the rabbis, as opposed to the biblical rule that applies to women and adultery. Thus, a man who has children with multiple wives will not be the father of a mamzer. There is no practical consequence for him.

There have been many suggestions on how to solve the crisis in the US. The most popular way in more modern circles is to sign a prenuptial agreement; basically, before getting married, both parties sign a legal document that if Person A wants to end the marriage, Person B must pay A a daily sum of money until person B gives/accepts a Jewish divorce. It's a way of getting the US courts involved in these disputes. We have Jewish courts, but they only have so much power, and an unfortunate number of them are corrupt. Getting American courts involved is where the real power comes in. There are also women trying to pass laws in NY classing gett refusal as abuse and illegal, but that obviously takes a lot more work. Gett refusal is fortunately illegal in Israel, and a man can go to prison for it.

Now, the most interesting part of the story. There is an Orthodox woman, Adina, on Instagram (@flatbushgirl) who has been heavily involved in the agunah movement for years now. She is an extremely controversial figure. She is not interested in the status quo, and she is not afraid to ruffle feathers. This obviously has made a lot of people angry. Her biggest focus right now is on one particular agunah, a woman named Malky. Her latest call to action for Malky: a sex strike. Basically, if enough married men have to go at least one night a week not getting their dicks wet, maybe they will start caring about Malky's plight, and pressure the rabbis enabling her husband to coerce him to give a gett. This suggestion has made a lot of people VERY ANGRY. Suddenly, EVERYONE is talking about the agunah crisis! I've seen it debated in multiple FB groups and on insta, Malky's case is really getting publicity. Unfortunately, most of that conversation centers around the ethics of denying our husbands sex. Sex is considered holy in Judaism, and the basis of a healthy marriage. I cannot overstate how important the rabbis consider it in our relationships. So, this has offended a lot of people. I've seen it compared to killing yourself or giving yourself cancer. I've seen claims that marriages will fall apart and leagues of men will cheat on their wives if this happens. I've seen it derided as the "cruelest, most hateful, sinful thing a person could do." Obviously, delaying sex for a night is leagues worse than any type of abuse a man could inflict on his wife. If only these women(!) could be as angry about their sisters in chains as they are about this suggested strike. If only the men complaining about this pending sex strike had half that anger for agunahs, we wouldn't be in this situation.

This call for a sex strike (and Adina's general efforts) have been so effective that multiple articles have been written about it, and it hasn't even started yet. See here:

If you are interested in helping Malky's case, you can donate to Adina's fundraiser here: https://fundd.org/174/freemalky. You can also visit @flatbushgirl on Instagram to keep track of the case, what you can do to help, and also issues facing Jewish women at large. Thank you for reading about what my sisters are going through.

Oh well thank god. Women are so underrepresented in Diesel Tech. Now finally the girls will have someone to look up to.

Did anyone pick up on his inclusion of “miss”? You’re giving the fetish away a little obviously even for a TIM, dude

CryingInYourInboxAugust 28, 2024(Edited August 28, 2024)

Imagine this man sitting there getting a boner in class over the thought of your young daughter calling him "Miss"

Oh apparently it's a Diesel technology class I missed that part. So we can guess that last year he got more female students than he expected and now he's doing this shit so he can be like "Hey fellow women it sure is tough being a womanly woman in such a manly field? Why don't we all have lesbian sex about it later since we're all so oppressed by the men around here!"

VegantinatalistAugust 28, 2024

i mean its probably for being addressed as a teacher. "miss penny" or whatever. just....ughhhh weird. im never bringing a child into this world regardless but stuff like this always makes me more confident in my decision

proudcatladysubtle standoffishnessAugust 28, 2024

Yes, that is what it’s for, and all the pedo student/teacher porn he watches is probably a big part of why he’s doing this. The inclusion of “miss” is very fetishy

CryingInYourInboxAugust 28, 2024

No woman goes by "Miss" usually it's thrown at us in a derogatory and patronizing way, which I'm sure he knows.

VegantinatalistAugust 28, 2024

i had teachers that were miss? because they were unmarried and didnt like Mrs.

i would go by miss personally. i think its cuter and i dont want people to think im married.

TheChaliceIsMightierDickPocket=/=VagAugust 28, 2024(Edited August 28, 2024)

I go by Ms. My marital status is irrelevant to my job.

EmmaGildedAugust 28, 2024

I go by Ms. too. I insist on it, and I pronounce it Miz.

VegantinatalistAugust 28, 2024

doesnt ms denote marital status?

voltairineAugust 28, 2024(Edited August 28, 2024)

it's actually a common misconception that ms denotes marital status, especially amongst younger generations! some children i've met (and adults) actually think ms denotes that a woman has been divorced, but ms can be used for any woman who doesn't want to use miss or mrs. i've been a ms since i was 18.

PhryneAugust 28, 2024

'Ms' gives as much information as 'Mr'.

voltairineAugust 29, 2024

indeed! great explanation. i love your username btw, phryne fisher is an awesome character.

TheChaliceIsMightierDickPocket=/=VagAugust 28, 2024

No. It's the neutral option in the US at least

MarthaMMCAugust 28, 2024

Both Ms. & Miss are used for adult women in the Midwestern area I live in.

TheChaliceIsMightierDickPocket=/=VagAugust 28, 2024

Yes, you can use either. Both are used. But they have different connotations from each other

VegantinatalistAugust 28, 2024

oh i didnt know it was considered neutral

So this is why I got yelled at by an older male teacher for not referring to a younger female teacher as married when she never seemed to care (also how the fuck was I even supposed to whether she was married?? It never came up)

SulphuricMirror👁BeNotAfraid👁August 28, 2024

It's supposed to be Ms., though, not "Miss". The difference between the two, even though it only appears different in writing and not how they are pronounced, is that one refers to an unmarried woman, and the other is/was used to refer to very young women/teen girls and little girls. It's slowly being taken off of forms, I've noticed, so that only "Ms." and "Mrs." are left.

I suspect this man just didn't know the difference. Or if he does, he's doing the Dylan Mulvaney "girlhood" thing, lol.

a_shrubNon Trinary (!3/¬3)August 28, 2024(Edited August 28, 2024)

even though it only appears different in writing and not how they are pronounced

I feel like I've noticed a slight pronunciation difference in some places (though I could be just imagining it), like Miss when spelled out is pronounced with a very sibilant 's' sound, and Ms. is more like Miz.

Eta: this is in places where there are both options for "title" on a form, "miss" for unmarried woman, and Ms. tends to get picked for older or divorced or unmarried or women who don't wish to advertised their marrital status.

SulphuricMirror👁BeNotAfraid👁August 28, 2024

Yeah, you're right sometimes there is a bit of a difference. Currently where I live I don't hear that word spoken aloud IRL because English is not the dominate language here, but now that I think about it I've heard the difference before, eps. on TV and in movies.

VegantinatalistAugust 28, 2024

ohhhhh i see, thank you this makes much more sense. theres so many things about the female experience and language and history that i dont know, even being a woman, because of shit like this, and im learning that the more and more i browse here.

SulphuricMirror👁BeNotAfraid👁August 28, 2024

No problem! It's definitely an old-fashioned thing and I think it became a grievance probably before I was born but only started to change when I was a kid, so I didn't even notice it and yeah I did figure "miss" was kind of a kid thing but I didn't know grown women were being or had been called that so I kind of learned about that being an issue only a few years ago. Also seems to be an issue that isn't present in every language, so there's that as well.

Ms. is definitely not rare where I live, and I don't think most people have any strong connotations with it. I don't, at least. I wouldn't assume a woman is specifically a feminist if she used Ms. for herself, I'd just think that's what she chose to go by, and she may or may not be married, which is not necessarily my business to know (the original purpose of using Ms.).

I have very neutral connotations associated with Ms. It's what I use for myself, on forms, since there aren't really other situations where I'm being formally addressed as Ms. Lastname, or even Ms. Firstname. I do pronounce it differently than Miss.

out of curiosity, I decided to look at the staff directory for a large local high school - there's about an equal mix of Mrs. and Ms., and a few teachers with Miss, though that's a minority. There's even one teacher whose title is listed as Dr. I also looked at the staff directory for a local elementary school to see if there was a difference. There, it seems like there might be slightly more Mrs. but still mixed in with others who go by Ms. No Miss though at that particular school.

Why did he decide to draw on sharpie eyebrows that don’t match his blonde hair? Lmao. Looking good, bud 😂

hard_headed_womanAugust 28, 2024

I suspect that's his own hair which he's colored. These creeps never wear short haired wigs.

His eyebrows are likely naturally dark, and he's now tweezed them and "defined" them with too much brow pencil.

Btw, cut the poor dude some slack! He's in his second puberty and is going to make mistakes!

VegantinatalistAugust 28, 2024(Edited August 28, 2024)

ive heard a lot of them say they dig the blond hair black eyebrow look because its extra early 2000s celeb/pornstar aesthetic. like pink, britney spears, etc. super fem but in an unnatural way so they are able to duplicate it

Unfortunately it just makes a heavy male brow look even more masculine.

Their real authentic selves involves going to the school bathroom with underaged girls in their class

VegantinatalistAugust 28, 2024

oh god, teachers have separate bathrooms right??

TheChaliceIsMightierDickPocket=/=VagAugust 28, 2024(Edited August 28, 2024)

Sometimes not, especially in secondary or trade schools.

hard_headed_womanAugust 28, 2024

I've never known of a school that didn't have separate bathrooms for staff.

My daughter might not protest her a lot of her poor working conditions, but she sure would protest if she had to use the kids' filthy bathroom!

TheChaliceIsMightierDickPocket=/=VagAugust 28, 2024

I use a kids bathroom at my current job because all the staff bathrooms are in a different wing and I just don't always have the time to get down there.
