I was talking with a friend who, for YEARS, is a huge activist focusing on the rights of women. There is a lot she believes that I can't agree with, but there are some things that I do agree with, like bodily autonomy, poverty, food insecurity, and maternal care, among others. On an aside, several of the things that she's been passionate about in the past few years (trans rights, and sex-work) are changing based on several years of intensive therapy to deal with her horribly craptastic past. I'm letting her therapist deal with that nightmare.
But, when I brought up the current plight of women in Afghanistan not even being allowed to speak to each other, she was dismissive and asked if we should go to war over their culture again. She's written them off, completely.
I don't see the UN doing anything more than wagging a finger at them with a tsk tsk. What, if anything, can we do? Or are we really that powerless to help them?
