A little bit of an awkward subject here, so I should start by saying upfront that I’m not interested in a truly NSFW discussion and I really only want to approach this from a practical, day-to-day, all-ages perspective. IMO, all sorts of things can be worn as lingerie that shouldn’t be the standard for how all women and girls dress.
Post-feminist awakening I’ve become more and more disturbed that panties are considered the standard underwear for girls and women. To me, boxers designed for the female body make so much more sense, even when a woman is on her period, so long as she’s wearing a pair that is well-designed for that purpose.
Some general advantages:
-Doesn’t ride up at all compared to panties
-Usually looser-fitting, therefore better for health
-Relatedly, probably easier to standardize sizes for so they fit comfortably
-Actually better for periods, though this is the exception to women’s boxers being looser-fitting
-Doesn’t create lines in the most awkward places possible
-Less embarrassing if accidentally revealed
-Covers all female anatomy, including hair, regardless of grooming choices
How did panties get to be the standard for women’s and girls’ underwear? Why aren’t panties a famous feminist concern in the same way that shaving, wearing makeup, or even bras are?
Edit: I’ve seen “women’s boxers” that resemble both briefs and more traditional boxers. It might be better to continue this discussion as “some variety of shorts, including boyshorts” vs panties. This has been really interesting, I honestly had no idea so many women found women’s underwear comfortable.
