I googled “Feminist Poetry”

Because on International Women's Day

I wanted to bring you words as iridescent as pearls,

I found poem after poem

About rape,

And freedom,

And how we don't have to be pretty,

I found lines and lines

About not being quiet,

And overcoming,

And men,

I remembered then that not every woman is a feminist

But all of them belong to the affinity

I woke to celebrate this evening,

So I searched for poems about sisterhood;

For the words that traced their fingers

Over the map of the world

For the verses which tried to cut out pieces of the sky

To wrap around a woman's shoulders,

As though she had fled from the burning building of her life

Into the safety of our kinship,

I read the words of women from different centuries,

From countries further away than I will likely ever travel,

I saw how we have kept our arms open

And our courage overflowing

Even when we could only use our library voices,

For our whole lives,

Even when we were told who we are

By people who were wrong,

Even when they tried to make us smaller than a matchstick

In a giant's hand,

And I am glad to be a woman;

To share that intuition and wisdom

With all of those who own it,

To be rising with them,

Like the birds in summer,

Who fly on fearless wings
