Women around the world continue to be arrested under colonial-era laws, including those criminalising abortion, suicide attempts and same-sex relations.
Although many of these laws appear gender-neutral, they disproportionately impact women due to patriarchal norms and systemic gender discrimination.
In several countries, laws criminalising witchcraft mostly affected women who do not conform to gender stereotypes, said the report, with unmarried women, widows, divorcees or those without children – particularly older and poorer individuals – particularly targeted.
Women’s choices about their dress and appearance were also frequently restricted by laws.
Makes for a grim read, this.
I hate it.
Also, Im surprised if same sex relations crimes disproportionately affect women. I would honestly expect gay men to bear the brunt of that.
I'd imagine they do as well. I suppose same-sex relations were mentioned because women are also punished, just not in the same ways. I think women can also hide things better, and female sexuality is generally very different from males.
I'm thinking a lot of gay hate has to do with the thought of sodomy, and how soooo many men abhor the idea of anal sex (mind you, only if they would be on the receiving end). It seems to draw out a very visceral reaction in some guys, unlike women with other women. For whom the filpside is to be some disgusting porn category because of course, but well, I digress.
At this point in my life, I think the reality of the dangers of sodomy have a lot to do with the censureship of it. Even in modern countries with modern medicine, MSMs have higher rates of STDs. For less developed countries, the health risk might still be a legitimate social concern.
It’s worth clicking through to see the actual data, that the Guardian sort of glossed over. https://www.prisonstudies.org/sites/default/files/resources/downloads/world_female_imprisonment_list_6th_edition.pdf
It's unbelievable to me there are still laws 'criminalizing witchcraft'. Hell, if witchcraft worked, there'd be no need for feminism.
