This woman is not a licensed medical professional of any kind, and she employed other unlicensed individuals who misrepresented themselves to women at these clinics as though they were licensed. While of course i do not agree with Texas' ridiculous war on abortion, it doesn't seem like this woman made it difficult for the state to come after her.

She is a licensed midwife.

Maria Margarita Rojas, 48, a licensed midwife

There seems to be more going on here.

OK. Looks like midwives are allowed to perform abortions in some states. But knowing how Texas is on the topic...

Texas had a broad interpretation law before it’s recent changes which would have allowed midwives to give abortions. It was never specifically outlawed in Texas. It is not one of the states that specified.

No article I've read about this story has made it completely clear to me whether the woman has been charged strictly because of the abortion-ban laws, or if there are other issues that could have led to her being charged with "practicing medicine without a license" even before those bans were passed. Worth keeping an eye on this one.

Agreed. Likely a combination of both. But hopefully we get more context later

"In Texas, male life is sacred. I will always do everything in my power to protect the unborn, defend our state’s pro-life laws, and work to ensure that unlicensed individuals endangering the lives of women by performing illegal abortions are fully prosecuted," Licensed individuals endangering the lives of women by following my laws to the letter can let women die.
