A mas murderer who killed four men in 1990 strangled his wife during a conjugal visit.

Reading the reddit thread on it, I didn't see one comment showing compassion or support for the victim. A few conservatives saying that a violent offender shouldn't get such visits, but that's it.

The thread overwhelmingly was worried about how this would affect the other prisoners and their "rights." About how it's important to "treat prisoners like people, with dignity." Some nebulous claims that conjugal visits reduce recidivism. It's a bit hard to prove that, imo, because some of those prisoners that qualified for visits were less likely to reoffend anyway, and it was not a reason to expand inclusion of who qualifies.

From the article:

Dowells' daughter-in-law, Nataly Jimenez, told the outlet of Dowells and Brinson: "They would read the Bible together. He was in school in there because she was pushing him to try to be this better person."

I think there should be strict protocol for violent offenders- no unsupervised contact with women. Or anyone, period, really. You have him in prison for that reason, so why allow conjugal visits where they are unsupervised for up to 40 hours?

Armand Torres, one of Dowells' two sons, thinks the prison should be held accountable for his mother's death.

“How could they just let this happen? I just don't get it," he said.

I don't get it, either. It's not like these two were married at the time of his crime. There was never any reason to let him have access to a 62 year old woman.

“My mom was just left alone, and she called for help, I'm sure, and there's nothing she could do," Torres said.

The distraught son asked: “Given the history that this guy has, we kind of wanted to know how is it even possible for them to be unsupervised?”

Yeah, Newsom, would you care to weigh in, here?

The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation told KCRA that conjugal visits "are a privilege, and Incarcerated persons must apply and meet strict eligibility criteria to be approved."

The bar is low enough that a mass murderer qualifies.

She was the primary provider for her sons, her elderly parents and her eight grandchildren.

Um......why? Why are her sons not the primary providers? Or equal providers? Unbelievable.

Anyway, while there's a case for "family visits" the idea is to reduce recidivism. If they're too dangerous to ever be let out, they're too dangerous for these visits.
