How were these men not arrested for assault???
The victim was actually arrested for resisting arrest and biting one of the two men that dragged her out of the building. The men are fine, they didn't face a single ounce of punishment for acting like animals. She was treated like a criminal.

It feels like it shouldn't make sense. It's not that I'm afraid to go to sleep, but when I lay down, my mind is racing.
I'm sure it didn't help that I listened to a podcast episode last night on the third wave experiment done in the 60s. It "inspired" a German movie called Die Walle. I had no idea until last night that the movie was based on a true story. The "experiment" showed just how quickly children could succumb to fascism and not even realise it, and this was done to 15 year olds, and at the end of the experiment the teacher basically told the kids that they were no better than Nazis, they fell into fascism so easily.
This man allowed this ridiculous experiment to get so out of control, he convinced impressionable young minds that they were special now, they were a part of something now, they had the authority to be violent towards other kids who didn't want to follow along with the experiment, then to tell them they're basically Nazis. A lot of the kids cried, they were traumatised. He manipulated these kids for 5 days and then made them feel bad for falling victim to what HE did to them.
And then I saw the video of that woman being dragged out, people just sitting and watching, some clearly happy about what was being done to her. How complacent everyone was. And she won't be the last woman to be assaulted for speaking up.
I'm so horrified by the whole thing. I didn't know what I was getting myself into when I started listening to the podcast, and I had no idea, I should have known that what happened in the town hall would be distressing. I guess I thought "did they REALLY actually drag this woman on the ground?" for some reason I was skeptical, I don't know why.
But sure as hell, pulled down from where she was sitting and literally being dragged away, I just can't believe it.
All of these men are becoming more and more emboldened by one another's behavior, how many people have done their Nazi salute on video now? And what can we do? Call who? Why would they care? Everyone is getting fired and replaced by sadistic yes-men who make up their own rules, pick and choose which laws matter and which ones don't, I am so overwhelmed by it all.
I'm overwhelmed and exhausted, and I don't know if I'm being overly sensitive/dramatic, or if my feelings are totally normal. What is normal?
I just want to puke my guts up.

You're not overreacting, believe me. I know a lot of people will say you are, but those are the same people who will sit quietly and watch a woman be dragged away for speaking out of turn.
I don't know if you use Threads at all, but there's a woman I follow there with the handle @fakeadultmom who's been posting chapters of a book she's writing about resisting authoritarianism and it's an incredible resource. Concrete, realistic, actionable ideas that give me some measure of hope.
We need to lean on each other now. And yes, that will mean trusting and relying on people who are still buying into TRA bullshit. Take what is useful, discard the rest. Your focus will have to be on surviving.

I read your comment and realized Die Welle sounded familiar—I was shown the American 1981 “the wave” in middle school, it’s based on the same book. I also remember being shocked it was based on a real story because I thought the outcome didn’t seem possible and was exaggerated for cinema. They were so quickly and easily manipulated.
Since then I’ve grown up—it is that easy to turn a group of people to cult behavior. I had the same thought watching the video of the woman being dragged out. They just acted like it was normal when it definitely wasn’t, like, yesterday. Their minds turned, and easily.

Your feelings are valid. You see the terrible inhumanity in the world and it effects you because you are an empathetic, kind human being. I try to read uplifting news when my mood gets like that, I spend a few dollars on temu to earn coins to feed kitties on a stray cat app. Surround yourself in news of human kindness, I can tell you are a wonderfully caring person.
The men who dragged her out of there were private security guards hired for the event, and who were also apparently not in uniform as required.
The police chief is coming down on the side of the woman. He said if the police had been notified, they would have intervened to stop the security guards.
The police chief said they will also be reviewing the woman’s citation for biting in the context of the entire event, so it sounds like they may not pursue that charge in the end.

I need some clarification here on US law enforcement. That's the local police chief on her side, right? But the man who first laid hands on her and told the "security" guys to "Get her" is the sheriff. So these separate branches of law enforcement are in direct conflict over this? Which one supercedes the other?
It depends on jurisdiction, but in my area, the sheriff and his deputies handle things that are not within city limits, so like rural areas and highways, and if cities are big enough to hire their own police, they are the power within that city. So if this was in a city with a police force, the sheriff was acting outside his jurisdiction and can get in a lot of trouble
That is a good question, and I don't know the answer. The police chief is responsible for the city, and the sheriff is responsible for the county (larger than the city).
