Here is a job description for a new position in WOMEN, gender studies:
The Department of Sociology and Interdisciplinary Social Sciences and Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies Program at San José State University is pleased to announce a search for an Assistant Professor of Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies beginning in August 2025. We seek someone with an area of specialization in Trans Studies with an emphasis on intersectional analyses. Possible secondary areas of specialization within this focus include queer of color critique, Trans futures, carceral studies, ongoing institutions and practices of Trans activism, disability studies, or fat studies. Potential courses taught includeIntroduction to Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies, Introduction to Transgender Studies, and Queering Gender, Race, and Class.

Edit 1: Fat studies? do we have "thin studies"? and, on that note: Edit 2: So we can have people who study trans but it has to only EVER be PRO-Trans! Not, say, those who study ROGD or trans&capitalism or god forbid, gender critical approaches to trans. Same with porn studies. It should be called PRO-PORN studies or Porn propaganda. There can only ever be ONE position/viewpoint and all the rest are not academically valid or even acknowledged. I have a billion ways to study trans--none of them them even legible (or legitimate) w/in an academia, even though I can throw all the trendy terms and deep philosophical concepts into my position.

I am dating myself here, but I survived my entire life without a smartphone. I fondly remember rotary phones. Remember that one in the kitchen attached to a wall with the coiled cord from the phone to the mouthpiece/receiver and I'd stretch it as far as I could to get some privacy. I do not own a smartphone to this day bc I think they are inane and evil (for a lot more reasons than coltan, but that is a good place to start).
I am dating myself here, but I really miss jogging with my sony walkman. I had the best mixtapes! Mostly songs I taped from KROQ. I miss underground and alternative radio stations long before clear channel. Bluetooth headphones make my ears feel weird bc of the bulk. To this day I use wired headphones.
...I miss being able to afford to go to the movies. Like movies were under $7.50. I miss quieter films, both conceptually (Silkwood, Norma Rae, Sophie's Choice as opposed to the MCU and Transformers--note a theme here? men/ action wrecked Hollywood. lol) and actual volume. One of the best jokes on The Good Place is the axe body spray called "Transformers" which smells both loud and confusing. (Michael Bay is satan.)
...I remember bookstores and record stores. Spending hours upon hours just thumbing through their catalogue. I discovered so many great bands that way, so many no one has heard of to this day.
OMG! VIDEO STORES! Remember going out to rent a video? That was the best. My husband and I would walk through Philly to the frozen custard place and then spend half the night looking at film titles at TLA. By the time we finally decided on something, we'd get home too late to watch it! Phuc streaming. I prefer expansive video stores any day of the week. Oh, and I remember when Netflix just meant having a DVD delivered to your door in that little red envelope.
This may date me, but I miss step classes. And stretch classes at the gym. Now it MUST be yoga. God forbid someone just teaches stretching w/o all the blah blah spiritual (appropriative) crap.

I couldnât agree more. I recognize that this makes me sound like a Luddite, but life was better without it. I was thrilled to be able to look up anything I needed to know when smartphones came out, but the tradeoff for having so much information at our fingertips is that the pace of life became ridiculously fast and community - and personal relationships - have been destroyed at levels I donât think we even recognize yet.

I remember only three to five television channels.
I remember pantyhose, not fondly you understand but I remember them.
I remember when air conditioning was considered a luxury.

I remember when tomatoes bought in the grocery store actually tasted like something.
I remember answering machines. And writing term papers on typewriters.
And when we had so few channels, we all had a shared culture of tv viewing. I still miss that, although I do enjoy the variety we have now.
You could walk into any workplace in America, and start up a conversation on what was on tv the night before even if you didn't watch that particular program. I mean..."Who shot JR?" LOL
I remember the shared culture too. This was a bigger loss than we yet realize I think. Though I too enjoy the variety and the little television golden age we had around the turn of the century.

And that terrible bamboo image that was supposed to mean they were silky. Not everything was better in the past.
I was in Philly after 2000. I grew up in LA (thus, KROQ, punk rock, bad ass fearlessness, etc.). I too remember all these. Much better TV shows in those days, if you ask me. Bank lines! wow that's a throwback! I had Laurie Anderson as my outgoing message. If you can name the song, you win all the feminist points for the day. lol
I'm one of the first iphone-as-kid gens and I absolutely loathe it. Growing up I loved it, but now I grow to hate it more with every day that passes. I'm addicted whether I like it or not, and everything I have done and do (school, socializing, work) depends on having my phone on me 24/7 and being reachable at all times.
Now it MUST be yoga.
I might be dating myself here, and being entirely too Canadian, but this reminds me of an episode of Corner Gas in which one character wants to start a Pilates class, and after everyone initially shuns her for promoting an exercise class based on the guy who killed Jesus, they finally ask her what it's about. When she describes it, they're like: "Oh, mat class. Wanda already teaches mat class."
This is hysterical! My friend in German Studies wants to write a book on Josef Pilates bc he was supposedly a big weirdo nazi or something. So not far off the Canadian joke! lol

I'm dating myself here, but I met Lyndon Johnson when he was Vice-President in July 1963. People were so jammed in that my dad had to pick me up and carry me in his arms. I got to meet these tall men at eye level. Johnson gave me a pass to the Senate Gallery, which was cool. Governor John Connally was there too, and there was no Secret Service or security of any kind that we could see. This was at a hotel ballroom.
I remember computer TAPES. I remember computer PUNCH CARDS. Heck, I even remember SLIDE RULES.
I still have my slide rule! I don't remember how to use it, but I have the book (yes, an actual book)! And I also used punch cards.
So my grandparents met working with mainframe computers for the military and there were literally at least 4 IBM branded slide rules in their things. I wanted them to be useful so badly. Also their coworkers made them a card that said congratulations on your new bundle of joy out of punch cards that took up 6 or more cards because of the limited amount of information they held. A cute joke I could never have understood without the physical evidence

Use them! You types on a keyboard, and the cards would be punched. Then you fed them into a machine and zip, zip, zip they were fed into the machine and read. God forbid you dropped your tray of ordered punchcards . . . that was the end for you and you were back to square one!
The sound of a ZX Spectrum loading is so nostalgic for me.
I'm dating myself here, but I know how to drive a stick shift. And the phone was, not just a rotary phone, but on a party line. Records were 33s, 45s, or 78s. And so much more....
I still drive a stick. I bought my last car on purpose for it. I doubt Iâll be able to find another one, but I want a hybrid or EV next time. If itâs going to drive like a brick at least it can be quiet.
I'm dating myself here but I can remember using a card catalogue at a library.
Not to brag, but I worked at the library and I got to pull out the spike thing that held the cards when adding new ones or weeding old ones.
Some of those card catalogues were really well-crafted! It makes me sad to think of all the ones that must have been discarded.

Iâm dating myself here, but I have fond memories of using floppy discs to save our classroom assignments. We could personalize our assignments by picking which color floppy disc we wanted. We were told floppy discs were the future!
I used to carry the updates for my website to the university on a floppy disc because I hadn't yet convinced my room mate that we needed internet.
Oh the simpler times when not everyone had internet!
EDITED TO ADD: also the fact that at one point there was only one computer, you couldnât make phone calls while it was on, and the dial up modem tone as it came online

I just love how personalized everything about the internet and computers were back in the day. Like yeah we have USBs and some sticks are different colors, but it doesnât have the same feeling as picking up a floppy disc in some bright color or changing the Lock Screen on the computer monitor with something you drew in MS Paint
Floppy disks came in so many great colours. USBs don't seem to have that variety.
I've personalised my lock screen. Maybe you can still do that with an MS paint picture?

Cleaning up the malware those flash sites dumped (at least once a month) is how I originally learned Windows internals. I guess I should thank my younger siblings/cousins for my career.
I'm dating myself here but I remember having to tear the edges off the printer paper and tear the pages apart before turning in my assignment.
I had a very noisy daisy wheel printer that I ran with tractor feed paper, original & 2 copies. Sprockets that had to be torn off the sides and then the original & 2 carbons separated. Sometimes the daisy wheel would go nuts, disintegrate and start spitting plastic type bars. In the 1980s. I remember when I got a B&W LaserJet printer and how much of a big deal that was.

We had typewriters for a VERY long time--unless you are talking k-12. I typed mine in college, wrote in cursive before that. I had to have that white out tape all the time to fix my typos. I still have those papers. This is will date me but: this (typeset) is why there used to be TWO spaces between sentences. I read a website that this definitely dates you...putting 2 spaces between sentences. Also, having a yahoo or aol email def dates you (I had yahoo email FOREVER).
I still type two spaces after every period on a keyboard. I canât stop!
I was taught 1 space after a comma, 2 spaces after a colon or semicolon, and 3 spaces after a full stop. And how to use carbon paper to make copies.

We never had 3 way calling, or a push button phone. đ
Having a second handset once the wireless landlines came around was just as good and didn't cost extra every month đ

I also remember when mobile phones became widespread. There were kids in first grade who got a phone before I did. I was one of the last in my age group to get my own, and I noticed how phones enabled my friends' bad social behaviour. We'd make plans and I would be in the meeting place on time and be waiting for ten minutes or so. When they finally arrived late, they'd say, "Sorry, you don't have a phone, so I couldn't tell you I was running late!" Even worse would be the times one person would show up and say, "We changed plans, we're doing this thing and meeting there instead. You don't have a phone, so I came to get you." As a teenager I rolled with it and got my own phone as soon as I left home, but as an adult, I really want to smack those kids across the head and say, "Stick to the plans and respect everyone's time!"

I had a hard, hard time throwing away this one mixtape a guy made for me, at least a decade after I didnât have any way to play it.

For me growing up, it was burning CDs with music from either iTunes or the internet, and then playing it as a mixtape playlist in the car or in a portable cd player!
I'm dating myself here, but I remember when margarine and artificial sweeteners were "health" foods.
I remember when the only artificial sweetener around was liquid saccharin and it was quite bitter. It didn't taste at all like sugar. It was gross. I am a super taster (twice as many tastebuds as normal people) and a picky eater.
My grandmother and mother would gaslight me and tell me "Oh it tastes just like sugar!! If you eat too much sugar you are gonna get sugar diabetes!!!". Nothing like being told at a young age that your perceptions are WRONG to mess with your head.
My Mom swore up and down that I couldn't actually taste the difference diet and regular soda. I know kids have more sensitive taste buds, but to this day, I still think aspartame tastes cloying and bitter.
Super tasters don't like sour, spicy or bitter tastes. This is why I have never liked alcohol.
When I was grown, I finally had fresh broccoli and it was good. My grandmother's cooking repertoire was that restricted. She thought boiled greens had vitamins.
In my twenties, I had Chinese food and liked it. In my thirties, I had Japanese food and liked it, because the flavors were subtle. But my dad refused to ever go to a Chinese restaurant so I never had it until I was in college.
My grandma told me margarine came with the coloring packet separate from the product in the 30s and her favorite thing in the world as a child was squishing the packets together to mix themđ„ș it's painfully wholesome

It kind of varied by state. I grew up in the upper midwest, with relatives in different states. Late 1950s in most, but in Wisconsin it was in the 1960s. Wine you say? Dry reds!

My username is in reference to the Green Honeycreeper, my favorite. In particular my reasoning is that it is one of the few bird species whoâs name is based on the female and not the male. Similar to your bird! (In the sense that the female was what the name was based on)

With all the hand wringing over "culturally inappropriate" bird names (birds named for dead white men) and how we will attract more birders if those names are changed, I call BS! Will we get more female birders if we change the names of those birds named for the male if the species? The lust is huge, just for the US. I may start a thread on that.
Yeah Iâve had mixed feelings about that myself tbh. I donât think it really is beneficial to change all of those names, especially since there are records upon records of research with the âoldâ names. Banding stations would have to annotate all of their previous data. Theyâd also have to learn an entirely new, already complex, bird banding annotation system. I think it would just be more confusion for what itâs worth.

I'm dating myself, but I grew up before anyone said WORD ONE about SUNSCREEN! We put tanning oil on instead--Coppertone--to bake and invite skin cancer. I am SOO angry I grew up w/o sunscreen.
Can you believe no one ever talked about sunscreen but rather we all just hung out at the beach or by the pool condemning ourselves to a future of skin cancer?
Things have gone full circle now! There are alternative health nuts who insist that baking in the sun prevents cancer, and using sunscreen causes it. Their evidence is that skin cancer diagnoses started going up roughly around the time that sun screen became more common.
My personal theory on that is that fashion and lifestyle changed such that people started exposing more skin to strong, direct sunlight. Tan skin became fashionable, clothing got skimpier, and more people had the leisure time to spend baking in the sun by the pool while wearing very little.

I'm dating myself here, but I remember when selfies meant going into the photobooth on the high street with your best friend and getting 4 photos taken in quick succession (no re-takes!), and then waiting anxiously outside for the little strip of developed paper to appear in the slot.
Much better than current selfies. I remember when selfies first started littering the internet. I wondered why people thought other people would enjoy a posed photo of themselves. I didn't get it at first lol.
I have literally never taken a selfie...so I am either a newborn or an oldie.
I have tried explaining to the youth that it wasnât âcoolâ to take a picture of yourself. That was very uncool. Also: showing people what you were doing or where you were was considered bragging. Finding hidden gems and exclusive places and music that no one else knew was the goal of the 90s

I'm dating myself here, but I remember summer as a kid was spent running around the neighborhood barefoot until dusk.
We didnât roam barefoot, more on bikes, but we did have the run of the whole neighborhood including the cemetery at the end of our street. We just couldnât go out onto one of the avenues.

OMG yes! I remember when your change would be counted out into your hand, starting at the cost of the item, counting up to the money you tendered. Often finishing with a phrase like "and five makes ten!".
But what about those old Credit Card machines!? âSHUNK-SHUNKâ as they pushed the metal thing across the carbon paper, making the raised card numbers appear!

GASP!!! YES!!! In my first waitressing job I actually had to USE one of those to take impressions of "cheque guarantee cards" (remember those???) alongside hand-written cheques :-D
I'm dating myself here, but my first crush was Richard Dean Anderson as MacGuyver. I was so distraught when I found out that TV shows weren't real life! (I was six). I was impressed with a man that could engineer a solution out of a paperclip and duct tape. I think that said more about me and what I'd grow up to do for a career than anything else đ€Ł

They were water fountains that worked everywhere or a hose somewhere or you just waited until you got home and drank.
Probably saved us because there's no PFAS like there is in all of these water bottles.

As a kid, I remember avoiding them despite being thirsty just because I dreaded needing to go pee at the "wrong" time, like in the middle of class or something. It was my worst nightmare to imagine a teacher not allowing me to go and it resulting an embarrassing "accident"; it was such an terrifying thought that I'd just try my best to ignore how thirsty I felt :(
I was afraid of needing to go to the bathroom during class, because teachers acted like that was horrible to have to go. So a lot of kids didn't pee all day until they got home. I had a male orchestra teacher that threatened to give me a detention for being late to orchestra at 12 noon, because I had to go to the bathroom and change my pad in the middle of the day during my period. We only had 6 minutes for passing period and my school was gigantic with 3,500 students.
I told my mom about it, and she said "He has a wife, he has a daughter, he should know about those things". I told him "take it up with my MOTHER" and he dropped it.
I hated that clown for four years because he would put his daughter in first chair and she wasn't that good. I learned that nepotism wins over musical talent and hard work at an early age. It didn't matter how hard anybody worked, because he had his four favorites that rotated between the first four chairs and I was not one of the four favorites. I was in the back of the first violins.
This was when we had to wear an elastic belt with hooks in the front and back like garter belt hooks, and thread the gauze strips through the front and back of the pad. There were different widths, but that was all. There was no high tech absorbent gel or sticky backed pads. They would get bunched up in front. I also had to wear a garter belt and hose to school, because panty hose had not been invented yet or were invented shortly thereafter. Keeping all the layers straight was a real hassle.
My grandmother was born in 1898 and told me about sewing diapers to wear for periods in high school, because sanitary pads had not been invented yet.

I was/am a germophobe so there was that, plus I didn't want to use the restroom at school either. The germophobe thing again.

Right? That was me too. But then we had a particularly bad spring run-off one year leading to flooding, and the tap water tasted like mouldy dirt. I drank bottled water for a lot of years after that.
I'd just recently got back to drinking tap water, but now we've had a water main break, and it tastes horribly of mouldy dirt again. With great resignation I'ma need to get some bottled water again :(

My mother was a legal secretary and got an IBM Executive with variable spacing, in 1955. The back space clicked in 32nds of an inch. You had to notice it and estimate where your corrections would go.
When I grew up I had an IBM Selectric. I was too fast for a manual typewriter. I could jam the type bars and make the Selectric ball burp. We didn't fool with a manual or a Smith-Corona electric.
